SRECIFICATION forming part of Letters Parent rio. 376.987, atea January a4, 1888. Y, Apfincanoumed october 20.1881. seriai'Naasasaea. (No model.)
To all whom `it may concern: y
Be it known that {,HUBERT C. HART. re siding at Unionville,l in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certainnewand useful Improvements in Boot or Shoe Heels; and I `do declare the following to be a full,- clear, andexact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciro cation. i
' My invention relates to an improvementin heels for boots and shoes, they object being to produce a heel'which shall be cheap, convenient of attachment to. a boot or Shoe, and of Y great solidity, vand hence durable.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a heel fo'r boots and Shoes consisting' of a heel-body and a top-lift therefor, of fastening devices, each consisting of a binding 2o end, a shorter corrugated or roughened wear-4 tion. Fig. 2 isa reverse plan view thereof with the toplift'removed and shown beside it. Fig. 3 is a similar view` with the said liftI in place, and Fig. l is a View lof theheel in vertical transverse Section. y p As herein shown, my improved heel consists ofa body, A, composed of any suitable num@ 40 ber of lifts, a top lift, B, and fasteners made of wire, and each composed of a binding end,
C, having its extremity iattened, as at D, a shorter wearing end, E, Ycorrugatedor roughened, as at F, and a flat circular flange, G, lo-
cated between and central to Such ends which 'are inthe same line, the said binding ends extending through perforations H, formed in the heel-body A, and projecting beyond the heel-seat I, and ybeing adapted to have their 5o projecting ends turned downto co-operate with the flanges for positively clamping the lifts of the body together, The said projecting ends are ordinarily passed through the sole of the boot or Shoe before they Aare'turned down,.so`that they will pei-forni the additional l which either puncture thetop lift so asgto be^ exposed upon its outer face, or embedtheml selves in it so as tobe exposed withthe first wear of theboot or shoe. i i
l A heel constructed under my invention i very ,solid and cannot getout ofshape, asthe several bodylifts are positively'bound to- 70 gether between 4the flanges and ,bent ends of the fasteners.' lIt is also easyand `cheap to make and apply, and very durable in use.
II am aware that a heel has before beenm/ade with a metallic fastener havinga wearing end and a binding end, the `latter projecting be-` f yond the heelseat and adapted' to be turned down and clinched. I ain also' aware that-it i is 01d to make ashoe-nail with a wearing end, Va retainingend,-and a collar rlocated in '1inet8o with and between such ends, the retaining end entering but not passing lthrough the heel-body. I do not therefore claim a'heelr made withmetallic fasteners, as described, or a shoe-nail having a collar located between 85, and in line with two ends of unequal length; but, j. f
Having lfully described my. invention', what I claim as new, anddesireto'secure by Letters therefor, of fastening devices each consistingvof a. binding end, a shorter corrugatedfor roughened wearing end, anda-flange located' between such ends which are in the sameline, the said wearing ends passing through'or..
nearly through the top 1ift,andthe'said binding ends extending through the heel-body and loo projecting through the heel-seat, and adapted specification in the presence of two subscribto have their projecting ends turned down to ing witnesses. co-operate with the flanges for positively clamping the lifts of the body together and 5 the entire heel to the sole, substantially as set VV'tnesses:
forth. CEAS. B. SHUMWAY, In testimony whereof I have signed this WILLIAM J. LUM.
