I UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICEQ GEORGE T. SANDFORD, OF KINSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
CASE FOR TRANSP ORTING FISH-EGGS.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,553, dated January 17, 1888.
Application filed March 9, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. SANDFORD, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Kinston, in the county of Lenoir and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Transporting Fish-Eggs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my invention, and is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
My invention relates to fish-egg transports for shipping shad-eggsand other fish-eggs from the spawning-ground to the hatching-grounds or transplanting-waters; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object of my invention is to provide the removable frames, trays, or drawers of a transporting-case for fish-eggs with a bottom, bed, mat, or lining of canton -flannel having its nap surface uppermost, said fabric being secured to the outside or inside of the frames, trays, or drawers, or to be used as a lining and removably laid upon the screen-bottoms of said frames, trays, or drawers, as may be preferred, in order that the fish-eggs to be transported may be deposited on the nap surface of said canton-flannel, and may be kept moist by sprinkling them with water supplied to the fish-eggs through a funnel having a perforated stem, which passes down through openings provided for it in the bottoms of the egg-supporting devices; or the water may be poured upon the eggs with an ordinary tin dipper and allowed to drip from the upper tray to the lower trays.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates-a case, which is preferably rectangular in form in outline, is provided with a perforated bottom, and is supported on suitable legs or feet, 0, so as to be slightly elevatedabove the floor or shelf upon which the transport is to rest either while Serial No. 230,264. (No model.)
stationary or in transit. The case A is provided at its front side with a hinged door, D, which when closed is secured by a hook, E, which is attached to the side of the case by an eyebolt, F, and engages a staple, G, projecting from the edge of the door. The top of the case A is provided with a central aperture, H. The case A is provided with a set of frames, trays, or drawers, I J K L being shown; but I do not confine myselfto any specific number of these, as it is obvious that convenience alone is to be consulted in this particular. r
The bottoms O of the frames, trays, or drawers are composed of canton-flannel, which is secured to the outside of the frames, trays, or drawers by tacks or otherwise; or said bottoms may be secured to the inside of said frames, trays, or drawers by tacks or the like.
I may, and sometimes do, provide screenbottoms X for the frames, trays, or drawers, for the purpose of giving support to the canton-flannel bottoms, and in such cases I use the canton-flannel as a. lining or mat for said bottoms, the nap of the cloth in this instance also being uppermost to receive the deposit of fish-eggs. At its center the bottom 0 of each tray or drawer is provided with an aperture, N, which, when the trays or drawers are pushed into place in the case, is aligned with the other apertures N and with the aperture H in the top of the case A. When both the screen-bottoms and the canton-flannel linings are used, both are provided with central apertures, N.
\Vithin the aligned holes N is seated the perforated stem R of a removable funnel, S, the lower end of the stem B being closed, so that water when poured into the funnel must pass through the perforations T, which are preferably arranged spirally therein, onto the fish eggs, which are deposited upon the nap surface of the canton-flannel.
The funnel having the perforated stem I denominate the sprinkler. The perforations in the sprinkler, being spirally arranged, provide for a perfect distribution of the water upon the fish-eggs deposited on the cantonflannel bottoms, mats, or linings.
For convenience in carrying it, the case is provided with a bail, V, having a spool, W,
thereon for the hand to grasp, so that the case may be readily lifted and carried from place to place when necessary.
In order to remove the frames, trays, or drawers for any purpose whatever, thesprinkler must be lifted from its seat in the case. It is not necessary for the sprinkler to remain in the case when it is not in use.
The holes in the bottom of the case, besides permitting the escape of water from the case, admit fresh air to the ease, and thereby perinit a thorough ventilation of the case while in use.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A fish-egg transport frame, tray, or drawer provided with a bed, mat, or bottom ofcanton-flannel having its nap surface uppermost, substantially as specified.
2. In a transport for fish-eggs, the combination, with themain case, of a removable frame, tray, or drawer provided with a bed, mat, or bottom of canton-flannel having its nap surface uppermost, substantially as specified.
3. In a transport for fish-eggs, the combina tion, with the main case having the perforated bottom and the central aperture in the top, of
the trays or drawers arranged therein and provided with canton-flannel bottoms having central apertures, and the funnel or sprinkler having the perforated stem passing through the apertures of the trays or drawers t0 the bottom of the ease, substantially as specified.
a. In a transport for fish-eggs, the combination, with a frame, tray, or drawer having a screen-bottom provided with a central aperture, of a canton-flannel mat or lining having a central aperture aligned with the aperture of the tray or drawer bottom, and the sprinkler having the perforated stem adapted to pass through the aligned apertures of the ease and the tray or drawer bottoms, substantially as specified.
5. In a transport for fish-eggs, the combination, with a drawer having a screen-bottom provided with a central aperture, of a cantonflannel mat provided with a central aperture and resting on said screenbottom, substantially as specified.-
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE T. SANDFORD.
