SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,543, dated January 17, 1888. Application filed October 1.1,' 1887. Serial No. 252.025. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD MURAINE, of Huron, in the county of Beadle and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and usefnl Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it per- 4tains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My inventionV relates to an improvement in plows; and it consists in the combination ofthe main part of the landside, having agroove formed in its front end, with the point of the landside, which is made in a'separate and distinct piece and is welded to the point or lay, and Which has a shank on its rear end, which extends back into the groove formed in the front end of the mainpart of thelandside, and which pieces are then secured together by means of a suit-able bolt, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to forni the landside in two separate and distinct parts,

the front part of whichis secured to the point,

so as to form a part thereof, and thus do away with the frog, and at the same time act the same as a solid bar-lay.

The front part, D, of thelandside has its top front edge shaped so as to have the lay G' welded theretdand is provided with the shank which fits in the groove B of the part A, as shown in Fig..1. After the shank has been inserted into the groove, a bolt, I, is-l passed through the'two parts, so as to secure them rigidly together. The lower edge of the front part, D, comes just flush with the bottom of5 the part A, and upon this part Dis formed a shoulder, J, against which the frontend ofthe part A bears. The parts A* and D, being fitted together in the manner here shown, form as solid and substantial a landside as though they were formed in asingle piece, and yet the parts can be separated at any time for the purpose of sharpening the lay or for repairing the plow, as may be desired, and they maybe used with or without the iandsidevplate.

By means of the constructionhere shown the prong or sub-lay is done away with, as used in all slip-boxes, and acts the same as a solid barlay. Three bolts hold the lay secured to the plow in the roughest ofground. l

Having thus described my invention, I claim YThe combination of the par-t A, having the groove B made in its front end, and having the extension G extending beyond the groove, so as to overlap the part D, with the part D, having the shank C to extend back into the groove and a shoulder, J, to bear against the front end of the part A, the lay which is secured to the part- D, and the bolt which secures the two parts of the landside together, substantially as shown and described.
