j This invention relates to plows, cultivators, and like implements for tilling the soil, and aims to provide a novel means for firmly securing a detachable point Yto the body of the earth-working device, whereby the point and body are braced and strengthened withoutA adding materially to the cost of that class of cultivator-shovels provided with points which are separable, so as to admit of an old and worn point being readily replaced by a new one or detached for the purpose of sharpening, thereby obviating the necessity of heating the body of the shovel or plow.

The improvement consists of a couplingplate overlapping the joint formed between the detachable point and the body of the shovel and secured to each by bolts or like fastenings and a socket bolted or similarly fastened to the body of the shovel and having a tongue at its lower end to overlap the upper portion of the coupling-plate. In the specific construction of these parts the coupling-plate is notched at its upper edge to receive the lower end of the socket, and the tongue is formed integral with the socket and overlaps the notched portion of the coupling-plate and serves to reinforce the'same.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changesin the form,proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to afull disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of a cultivatorshovel of ordinary construction having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the socket. Fig. 5 is'a detail View ofthe coupling-plate.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by the same reference-characters.

The invention is designed to be applied to any form, style, or pattern of earth-working device, such as a plow or cultivator shovel provided with a detachable point, and is illustrated in connection with a cultivator-shovel, of which 1 represents the body, and 2 the detachable point, the parts meeting on a straight line. The coupling-plate 8 overlaps the joint formed between the body and point and is bolted or otherwise secured to each to admit of the point being readily detachable, and this coupling-plate has a notch 4 in its upper edge to receive the lower end of the socket 5, bolted or secured in any desired manner to the body of the shovel. This construction provides an interlocking joint between the socket and coupling-plate and insures the parts against moving laterally when subjected to side stress when in service. A tongue 6 forms an integral part of the socket and extends over the coupling-plate to reinforce and strengthen it, thereby obviating the necessity for projecting the coupling-plate to any very great extent along the body of the shovel beyond the joint formed between the said body and the point.

Thepconstruction and arrangement of the parts are such that either the socket or the coupling-plate may be removed independently without disturbing the other, or the point may be detached for any required purpose and replaced by a new one with the utmost ease and dispatch.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. In a cultivator-shovel or similar earthworking device provided with a detachable point, the combination of a coupling-plate overlapping the joint formed between the body and point and secured to each, and a socket secured to the body of the shovel and interlocking at its lower end with the upper edge of the coupling-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a cultivator-shovel or earth-working device of kindred nature having a detachable point, the combination of a coupling-plate overlapping the joint formed 'between the body and point, and a socket secured to the IOO formed with a tongue overlapping the same, substantially as set forth for the purpose (lescribed.
