UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe JOHN S. WERTZ, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT FOR WIRE MATTRESSES.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,432, dated December 27, 1887.
Application tiled June 24, 1887. Serial No. 242,400. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. WERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, `in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Supports for Wire Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
I VIy invention relates to an improvement in adjustable supports for wire mattresses; and 1t consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fullyset forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a light, cheap, and portable support adapted to be attached to the frame of the mattress, and bear under the mattress to prevent the latter from sagging.
In the drawings, Figurel is a top plan view of a mattress provided with a support embodying my improvements, a portion of the mattress being removed in order to disclose the support. Fig. 2 is a Vertical longitudinal sectional View taken on the line x .r of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a de# tail view of the upper coil of the spring H.
A represents a wire mattress of vthe usual form, having the frame B, which comprises the transverse end bars, C, and the longitudinal side bars, D, on which the ends of the bars C are secured.
E represents the frame of the support, which comprises a pair of longitudinal side bars F and a number of crossbars, G, which have their ends secured on the under edges of the bars F. j
H represents a series of coiled supportingsprings which are arranged on the bars G. In the upper coil of each spring is formed an opening, I, and the free end of each spring is provided with a hook, K, adapted to engage the said opening. The hooked end of each spring is passed through the upper coil of its Vcompanion spring, and is then caused to en- L represents a series of supporting-brackets,
which are right-angular in shape, and are provided at their lower ends with inwardly-ex- The frame E is arranged transversely between A the side bars of the mattress-frame at any desired point, and the brackets on the ends of the frame E are caused to engage the upper edges of the side bars of the mattress-frame, as shown, so as to support the frame E in place. The springs on the frame E bear under the mattress and prevent the same from being stretched and-caused to sag when in use.
It will be readily observed that the supports may be moved longitudinally on the mattress A,so as to cause the supporting-springs to bear under any desired portion of the mattress.
It will be seen that the angle-arm brackets L merely rest on the upper faces of the sides of the mattress-frame, and thus the entire support may be adjusted along the mattress-frame to any point desired, the arms L sliding readily along the side bars of the mattress-frame. The support can thus be adjusted to suit the occupant of the bed.
Having thus described my invention, I claini 1. A support for spring-wire mattresses, comprising the frame E, adapted to lie transversely between the side bars of the mattressframe, and having the longitudinally-adjustable bracket-arms L, adapted to engage the side bars of the mattress-frame, and the interlocking springs attached to frame E and adapted to bear under the wire mattress, substantially as described.
2. A support for spring-wire mattresses, comprising the frame E, having the supporting-springs II thereon, the right-angled brackets L, having the slotted arms M arranged under the ends of frame E, and the bolts O,pass ing through the frame E and the slotted arms of the brackets,to secure the latter to the frame ICO at any desired adj ust-ment, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the wire mattress having the frame provided with the side bars, of the supporting-frame, having the longitudinally-adjustable bracket-arms secured thereto and adapted to engage the side bars of the mattress-frame, and the supporting springs 4ar-Y ranged on the upper side of the supportingframe and bearing under the wire mattress, substantially as described.
4. In a support for a wire mattress, the herein-described removable support, comprising the frame E, adapted to be placed between the side bars of the mattress and to bear at the sides against the sides of said mattress, said frame carrying the interlocking snpportingsprings to bear under the mattress, and the bracket-arms L, angular in form, adjustably secured to the frame E, and having their ends resting on the upper faces of the side bars of the mattressframe, as set forth.
5. In combination with the wire mattress A, the herein-described removable support therefor, comprising the frame E, composed of a series of slats, and the springs H, secured to l the slats, said frameE being placed within the side bars of the mattress, and having its springs H bearing under the Wire covering of the mattress, and the angle-arms L on the side of the frame E, to take over the upper faces ot' the side bars of the mattress-frame, whereby the support E can be shifted along under the mattress-frame to any point desired, as set forth.
6. In combination with the mattress-frame, the hereindescribed removable support, comprising the frame E, having the supportingsprings H, and arranged under the mattressframe so that said springs H will bear against the under side of the wire covering of the mattress, the sides of the support E havinga sliding connection with the side bars ofthe inattress-frame, whereby said support may be slid along under the mattress to any point desired without removing any part, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
