TROUSERS STRETGHER. No. 375,100.

WALTER A. ROLLINS AND HARRIS ON S. ROLLINS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TROUSERS-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 37 5,100, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed Qctoher 8, 1886. Serial No. 215,751. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WALTER A. Romans and HARRISON S. RoLLINs, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Stretching Pantaloons and other Garments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a more convenient, economical, and expeditious means than formerly employed for restoring distorted garments to their proper shape, which we attain in the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the device complete, the dotted continuous lines representing it in another'position, hereinafter referred to. Fig. 2 is a side view of the joint E F G, ends of clamps, 8w.
Similar parts are indicated throughout by similar letters.
In the complete drawings, Fig. 1, A A represent clamps of wood or metal, (preferably the former,) the upper and lower parts of which are bound together with screws .and thumb-nuts at or near their ends I I I I.
B B and C C are side bars, (by preference made of light fiat iron, but capable of being constructedof any inelastic material,) which have holes in their outer ends, or hooks formed thereon, through which the screws at I I I I pass, thus securing them to clamps A A. These side bars, B B and G O, arejoined at or about their middle by the joint shown in Fig. 2. This joint is formed by two similar parallel clips or bars, B B, one on the lower and one on the upper side of the inner ends of bars B B and G 0, being loosely pivoted to same at E E and G G, but solidly fastened to cross-bars D D at F F. The inner ends of side bars, B B, are rounded. The inside corners of the inner ends of C G are also rounded; but a square shoulder is formed upon the outside corners of same, substantially as shown. The cross-bars D D overlap each other at their junctionin the middle of the apparatus, and are bound together at M by a thumb screw and nut or other suitable device.
H H are light stay-chains, either fixed permanently or hooked, as may be found more convenient, to clamps A at K K and to side bars, B B, at L L. These stay chains, it will be seen, serve to limit the outward movement of the side bars and prevent such bars from moving outward at their inner ends beyond the desired point.
J is a hook or ring by which the device may be hung up.
The operation of the stretcher is as follows: The thumb-nut at M being slightly loosened, the cross-bars D D are depressed at their center by drawing them away from the end upon which the stay-chains are fixed, thus decreasing the distance between clamps A A by drawing them toward each other and causing the entire apparatus to assume the position indicated by the dotted lines. The top halves of clamps are then removed entirely, or merely swung around on one of the points I after rcmoving it from the other. The garment to be stretched is then placed on the lower halves of clamps A A, their upper halves returned to position and screwed down, the cross-bars D D returned, as nearly as the nature of the garment will permit, to position shown in solid lines, and the thumb-nut at M tightened to hold them fast. The apparatus is then hung up by hook or ring J.
Having thus described our invention and its operation, we claim as new and desire to have Letters Patent issued to us for- 1.' In a garment-stretcher, the combination of the end clamps, the side bars, B 0, arranged in pairs andehaving one end connected with the clamps A near the ends of the latter, joint-bars B, pivotally connected at their opposite ends with inner ends of the side bars, and means whereby to secure said joint-bars in their different adjustments with reference to the side bars, substantially as set forth.
2. In a garment-stretcher, the combination, with the end clamps and the side bars, B and C, of the joint-bars B, the cross-bars D D, and a clamp forconnecting the adjacent ends of said bars D D, substantially as set forth.
3. In a garment-stretcher, the combination, with the clamps, the side bars, the cross-bars, and connections between the side and cross bars, of the stay-chains H, and a clamp for connecting the inner ends of the cross-bars, substantially as set forth.
