SYLVIUS HOFF, OF FREIBURG-IN-BRISGAU, GERMANY.
DRYING AND STRETCHING FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 648,745, dated May 1, 1900.
Application filed September 17, 1898. Serial No. 691,273. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVIUS How, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Freiburg-in-Brisgau, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drying and Stretching Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to aframe for drying cloth or linen articles provided with means for holding them on the frame, such means being rings or eyelets secured to the article or ordinary clips one branch of which is pro vided with rings to hold the clip on the frame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken perspective view of the frame embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a preferred form of clip for securing the articles on the frame, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device for adjusting the stretching-bars forming a part of my invention.
The stretching and drying frame is composed of uprightsa a, connected together by cross-bars (Z d, secured near the top and the bottom of said uprightsfiorming a rectangular frame, as shown in Fig. 1, and it being understood that two such frames at least are used, though only one is shown in the drawings. Resting on the cross-bars d d of said frames are horizontal rods 1) 12, upon which the supporting-rings for the articles to be dried are strung. WVhen the articles 0 0 have been hung between the upper and the lower series of rods 1) b, the latter are adjusted or moved away from each other by means of stretchers of the form shown in Fig. 3, each of which is composed of two plates jj, having notches in their outer edges adapted to engage the rods 1) and provided with stems 7t 70, which are reversely threaded and extend into a swivelnut Z, reversely threaded to engage the threaded stems 7c 7t, and provided with suitable handles by which they may be rotated. It will be apparent that the rotation of the swivel will separate or draw together the plates jj and produce a corresponding movement or adjustment of the upper and lower series of rods Z) Z), engaged by said plates. It will also be apparent that the plurality of notches in said plates will permit a varied adjustment of said rods horizontally.
Where it is desired to dry and not to stretch articles, the clip shown in Fig. 3,having springoperated jaw and a ring at the end of one of its members, is attached to an article and the ring passed over one of the rods 1). Any other form of clip having a ring adapted to slide on the rod could be substituted for that shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A drying and stretching frame composed of uprights and cross-pieces secured thereto, of upper and lower series of rods adapted to hold the articles to be dried, and stretching devices composed of plates having notches in their outer edges adapted to engage said rods, and means for separating and drawing together said plates, substantially as set forth.
2. A drying and stretching frame composed of uprights and cross-pieces secured thereto, of upper and lower series of rods extending transversely of said cross-pieces,-means for suspending articles to be dried from said rods, and stretching devices composed of plates having notches in their outer edges adapted to engage said rods, and having oppositelythreaded stems, and swivel-nut engaging said stems, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
SYLVIUS HOFF.
