Description
ADJUSTABLE MAP AND'G'HART SUPPOBIEE.
No. 260,197. I I Patented June 27, 1882.
Jay-z R WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
HENRY E. HAYES, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
ADJUSTABLE MAP AND CHART SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,197, dated June 27, 1882.
Application filed April 6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, HENRY E. HAYES, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Map and Chart Supporters, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
Reference is-to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lower part ofthe same, shown as applied to a table-top. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower part of the same, partly in section and part being broken away. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the hollow cylinder. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken through the line :10 a, Fig. 4, and showing the rods in place. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the inner side of one of the washers. Fig. 7 is aperspective view of the connecting-bar. Fig.8 is a plan view of an end part of the map-holding bar. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 10 is a sectional end elevation of the hollow cylinder, taken through the line y y, Fig. 5.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience in the suspension of maps and charts for temporary use. p
The invention consists in an adjustable map or chart supporter constructed-with two clamps having their lower jaws connected by a crossbar provided with a hand-screw, and having eyes at their outer ends, a hollow cylinder fitting hetween the eyes of the clamps, and having interior grooves to receive the locking-bar and holes and sockets to receive the map-suspending rods, a slotted locking-bar having a screw upon its end, washers placed at the outer sides of the clamp-eyes, and a hand-nut; also, in the combination, with the clamps having eyes and the map-supporting rods, of the hollow cylinder having interior grooves and holes and sockets, the slotted bar passing through the cylinder and clamp-eyes, and having a screw upon its end, washers placed upon the outer sides of the clamp-eyes and a hand-nut, whereby the said rods can be readily adjusted and will be securely held; also, in the hollow cylinder having interior-grooves to receive the edges of a locking-bar, and holes and sockets to receive the ends of the map-carrying rods; and, also, in the combination, with the maps or charts, of the clamping-bars having eyes at their ends, whereby the said maps or charts can be readily suspended from the supportingrods, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A A represent two clamps, the ends of the lower jaws of which are connected by a short bar, 13. In a screw-hole in the center of the bar B works a hand-screw, O, which has a washer, D, swiveled to its forward end to prevent the chair-back, table-top, or other support to which the said clamps may be attached from being injured or marred by'the said screw.
Upon the outer ends of the clamps A A are formed eyes E, the opposite sides of which are concaved, as shown in Fig. 3.
F is a hollow cylinder interposed between the two eyes E, and which has its ends flared and rounded to fit into the concaved inner sides of the said eyes. Into the outer sides of the eyes E are fitted washers G H. The washer G has a slot in its middle part to receive the flat bar I, which has a cross-head upon its rear end to rest against the outer side of the washer G, as shown in Fig. 3. The said edges of the bar I fit into grooves J in the opposite sides of the interior of the cylinder F.
Uponthe forward end of the bar I is formed a screw, K, to pass through a hole in the center of the washer H and receive the hand-nut L, by which the various parts of the supporter are held together. Upon the inner side of the washer H are formed pairs of lugs M, to reinder F. The holes 0 and sockets P are so arranged that the lower ends of the rods N will incline toward each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The upper ends of the rods N are bent so as to be parallel with each other, as shown in Fig. 5.
Q represents the maps or charts to be sus pended, and which are secured at their upper edges between two bars, It, by nails, screws,
or rivets. To and between the ends of the bars R are secured the ends of metal straps, the middle parts of which are bent to form eyes S to receive and fit upon the ends of the rods N, so that the maps or charts can be readily suspended and removed. With this construction, by loosening the nut L the cylinder F, bar I, and washers G H can be readily turned to bring the rods N into such a position that the maps or charts Q can be readily seen. With this construction, also, the supporter can be readily attached to a chair-back, as shown in Fig. 1, a table-top, as shown in Fig. 2, or other convenient support.
In case maps or charts already mounted are to be used a rod having eyes upon its ends and provided with hooks can be placed upon the upper ends of the rods N, and the maps or charts can be suspended from the said hooks.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An adjustable chart and map supporter, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the clamps A A, having cross-bar B, hand-screw C, and eyes E, the hollow cylinder F, having interior grooves, J, and holes and sockets O P, the slotted bar I, having screw K, the washers G H, and the hand-nut L, as set forth.
2. In an adjustable map and chart supporter, the combination, with the clamps A A, having eyes E and the rods N, of the cylinder F, having interior grooves, J, and holes and sockets O 1, the slotted bar I, having screw K, the
washers G H, and the hand-nut L, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said rods can be readily adjusted and securely held, as set forth.
3. In a map and chart supporter, the hollow cylinder F, constructed, substantially as herein shown and described, with interior grooves to receive the edges of the locking-bar and holes and sockets to receive the ends of the map-carrying rods, as set forth.
4. In a map and chart supporter, the combination, with the maps or charts Q, of the clamping-bars It, having eyes S at their ends, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said maps or charts can be readily suspended from the supporting-rods, as set forth.
HENRY E. HAYES.
