UNITED STATE$ PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. RYAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
-IMPRQVEMENT IN PANTALOONS-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,619, dated March 9, 1875; application filed September 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. RYAN, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pantaloons-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side View of my improved stretcher. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of an additional rod. Fig. 3 is an under-side view of the upper clamp, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 4 is a top view of the lower clamp.
My invention has for its object to furnish a simple and inexpensive device for application to pantaloons, to remove the knee-folds and wrinkles that have been formed in them by use, leaving them straight and smooth.
The invention consists in the combination of the extension-rods, their tubes, the screwsocket, the swiveled screw and its rod, with the clamps; in the combination of the extension-rod and its tube with the clamps; and in the combination of the spring with the extension-rod and its tube, whether the said spring be placed at the side of the said rod or within the said tube, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the upper clamp, which is formed of two or three bars of wood or metal, hinged to each other at one end, and furnished at the other end with a hand-screw, a, or other convenient fastening.
When two bars, A, are used, the pantaloons are folded from front to rear, and the waistband is clamped between said bars.
When three bars, A, are used, the panta- I loons are folded from front to rear, the center bar is passed within the waistband, and the side bars along its outer sides.
between the bars B.
G are two rods, the upper ends of which are inserted in holes in the under side of one of the bars A. The other ends of the rods 0 are inserted in tubes D, where they are adjustably secured by set-screws d. The
lower ends of the tubes D are formed upon or rigidly attached to the arms of the socket E. In the socket E is cut a screw-thread to receive the screw F, the outerends of which are swiveled to the upper end of the rod G. The lower end of the rod G is inserted in a hole in one of the bars of the lower clamp B.
In using the device the clamps A B are secured to the pantaloons in the manner hereinbefore described. The extension-rod O D E F G is adjusted to the proper length, and its ends are inserted in holes in the bars of the clamps AB. The swiveled screw F is then turned to put the pantaloons under the necessary tension.
In the case of very long pantaloons the tendency will be for the clamps to tip a little to one side, so that one side of the pantaloons would be stretched a little more than the other. To remedy this, an extra extensionrod may be used, the ends of which are inserted in holes in the .clam ps A B. This ex tra rod is made in two parts, a tube, H, and a rod, I, sliding into it, and secured in place by a hand-screw, h.
The rod H I maybe provided with a spring, J, of sufficient strength to support the clamp in position, but which may be compressed sufficiently to allow the said rod to be readily inserted and removed from the clamps A B.
If desired, springs may be inserted in the tubes D H, to rest against the ends of the rods 0 I, to hold them out with sufficient force to enable the device to be conveniently applied to the clamps A B.
Several holes are formed in the clamps A B to receive the ends of the extension-rods to enable the strain to be applied to the forward or back part of the pant-aloons, as may be required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the extension-rods 0, tubes D, screw-socket E, swiveled screw F, and rodG, with the clamps A B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the extension-rod I and tube H, with the clamps A B, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, in a pantaloons-stretcher, of the spring J, and the extension-rod and its tube, said spring being arranged substantially as described, to operate in the manner set forth.
Witnesses: JOHN D. RYAN.
