PAPER-HANGERS BOARD OR THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK D. XVELLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Paper-Hangers Board or' the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to paper hangers paste boards or tables, and has for its object the provision of a collapsible board or table top of light, simple and durable construction in which the pasting surface is composed principally of canvas or other flexible material that can be quickly and cheaply renewed, that is adjustable in width to accommodate different widths of paper, that forms in combination with the frame work a rigid pasting surface when adjusted for use, and that can be quickly collapsed and rolled into a small bundle for transportation.

The operation, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention are fully described in the following specification, and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a strip of wood or other suitable material, which forms one edge of the board or table and is of suitable strength and thickness for such purpose. One side edge of a strip of canvas 2 or other suitable flexible material is securely clamped to the strip 1, as by being gripped between the inner edge of such strip and a cooperating clamping piece 3, which is rigidly secured to this strip 1 by corner straps 4c or in any other suitable manner.

or other suitable material, and the removable clamping strip 6, the canvas being passed over the top and around and under the outer edge of the strip 5 and a portion thereof drawn into a groove of an undercut shoulder 7 on the bottom of said strip 5 by the clamping strip 6, one edge of such clamping-strip being adapted to fit within such groove, as indicated. The canvas is then drawn inwardly over the clamping strip 6 and its edge permitted to hang freely from the inner edge thereof.

The strip 6 is forced to its seat in the groove of the shoulder 7 by the cam-clamps 8, which are secured to the bottom of the strip 5 near its inner edge. These clamps are shown as constituting the holders 9, which are secured to the strip 5, the belt or clamp members 10, and the cam-levers 11, which latter, when swung on their pivots, act to force the bolt members in or out. Any other suitable form of clamp may be used, however, if desired.

The canvas, when clamped by the strips 5-6 in proper spaced relation to the strip 1, is stretched taut by two or more sets of bars 12, 12, which are secured together intermediate their outer ends and have such outer ends projected into registering sockets 13, provided in the inner edge of the strip 5 and also through the clamping piece 3 and in the inner edge of the strip 1. The bars 12 are each provided with a plurality of apertures 14 to adapt them to be secured together at any desired position of relative longitudinal adjustment by pivot-pins or bolts 15, and also to receive a locking pin or bolt, as 16. The sets of bars 18 are intended to act as toggle-levers and when straightened to effect a relative retraction of the opposed frame strips and a consequent stretching of the canvas or material 2. The ends of the bars 12 project a suitable distance into the frame strips to prevent a tilting of such strips, relatively to the associated bars. It is apparent that the straightening of the bars 12 from the broken position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 will impart a powerful stretching force to the frame strips and a consequent rigid stretching of the canvas. The bars 12 may be relatively adjusted to any desired length to suit the distance at which it is desired to space the frame strips apart.

It is apparent that I have provided a table or paper-hanging board of the knock-down type, which is simple, strong and durable set up or knocked down and folded in compact form to facilitate a carrying thereof.

I Wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts or to any particular kind of material for the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as neW and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,- o

1. In an article of the class described, a pair of frame strips, one of which has sockets therein, a strip of flexible material attached at its opposite edges to said frame strips, and a set of bars, one of the ends of which are inserted into said sockets and the opposite ends thereof engaged to the other frame strip, said bars having their inner ends pivotally connected to form toggles.

2. In an article of the class described, apair of frame-strips having sockets therein, a strip of flexible material rigidly attached at one edge to one of said strips and removably attached to the other of said strips at a distance from the first mentioned strip, and sets of bars having their outer ends projecting into the sockets in said frame-strips and being pivotally connected intermediate their outer ends to form toggles.

In an article of the class described, a sheet of flexible material, a frame-strip attached thereto, a second frame-strip spaced from said first frame-strip, said two framestrips havingso'ckets in the r inner sides, cam actuated clamping means associated With said second frame-strip for clampingthe materlal thereto, and sets of bars having their outer ends loosely fitting into the sockets in said frame-strips and being pivotally connected intermediate their ends to adapt. them to serve as toggles, and means for securing said bars against relative pivotal movements. r

4:. In an article of the class described, a pair of fra-m'e str'ips having sockets therein, a strip of flexible material attached at its opposite edges to said frame-strips, and a set of bars havingtheir outer ends projecting into the sockets in said frame-strips and their inner end portions pivotally connected to form toggles.

5. In an article of the class described, a

a strip of flexible material attached at its opposite edges to said'frame-strips, and sets .of bars having their outer ends projecting loosely into the sockets in said frame-strips and having their inner end portions in adju'stable pivotal connection to form toggles of predetermined length.
