Roberts [57] ABSTRACT A brush contained head for ball washing machines. This device consists primarily of a pair of spaced apart end plates which include brackets for portably carrying the brush arms and a pair of concave brushes, one secured to each of the plates, the plates include adjustment screws for adjusting the spacing apart of the scrubbing brushes to accommodate a football orbasketball.
4 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures BASKETBALL AND FOOTBALL WASHING HEAD This invention relates to rotary scrub brushes and more particularly to a basketball and football washing head for a ball washing machine.
It is therefore the primary purpose of this invention to provide a basketball and football washing head for a ball washing machine which will have adjustable arms to which the brushes are fastened in order to accommodate either a football or basketball.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the type described which will include a pair of parallel, spaced apart end plates of hexagonal or circular shape, the end plates serving to pivotably carrying the arms of the brushes and concaved brushes for the ends of a football.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a washing head of the type described which will have adjustable screw members which will bear against the extending ends of the brush arms so as to either space the arms further apart from each other or close them inwardly so as to accommodate the peripheral surface of a football or the like.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a football and basketball washing head of the type described which will have brush surfaces covering the entire peripheral surface of the ball so that when the machine is started, it will thoroughly scrub the ball when the device is rotated by power means.
Other objects of this invention are to provide a basketball and football washing head which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will become readily evident upon a study of the following specification together with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the present invention shown in elevation and removed from a ball washing machine;
FIG. 2 is a face view of one of the end plates of the device of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a rear view of FIG. 2.
According to this invention, a basketball and football washing head is shown to include a pair of parallel, spaced apart end plates 11 and 12 of hexagonal configuration. A plurality of radially spaced apart brackets 13 freely carry an extending arm 14 secured fixedly to a brush 15. A pivot pin 16 is carried transversely through each of the arms 14 and pin 16 is carried within the brackets 13 which enables the arms 14 to be moved inwards and outwards in a manner which hereinafter will be described.
Also carried on the end plates 11 and 12 is a concaved brush 17 for engaging the outer ends of a ball.
Each of the end plates 11 also carries a plurality of set screws 19 which abut with the extending ends 20 of the brush arms 14. The set screws 19 provide adjustment means for the spacing apart of the arms 14 carrying the brushes 15.. I
In use, the arms 14 are adjusted to accommodate football 21 by means of the screws 19. When the arms 14 are properly adjusted, they may be pivoted outwards so that the football 21 may be received between the brushes 15. After the placement of ball 21 within the head 10, springs 22 are engaged with the outsides of the arms 14 so that the brushes 15 will bear against the outer peripheral surface of the ball 21 so that when the head 10 is operated, the brushes 15 will thus clean the ball 21.
For use with a basketball, (not shown), the arms 14 are then readjusted by means of the screws 19 so as to accommodate the outer peripheral surface of a basketball.
What I claim is:
1. A basketball and football washing head for a ball washing machine, comprising a pair of parallel, spaced apart end plates for mounting the head within the ball washing machine, said end plates each having one face opposing one face of the other plate, a plurality of radially spaced apart brackets mounted on each end plate on said opposing face providing pivot support means for brush arms for scrubbing the outer peripheral surface of a football or basketball, a pair of concaved brushes carried by said plates on said opposing faces providing scrubbing means for the ends of a football, brush arms pivotally mounted on said pivot support means, brushes mounted on said brush arms, means on said arms for biasing said arms inwards, a plurality of adjustable screws carried by said end plates providing a means for adjusting said brush arms inwards or outwards of said head so as to' accommodate either a football or basketball.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said brackets of said plate are fixedly secured to one face of said plates and said brackets freely and pivotably carry said arms containing said scrub brushes which will engage the outer peripheral surfaces of the ball when placed within said head, said arms being supported upon pivot pins, one pin each, and said pin is carried by said brackets of said plates.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein each of said arms containing said brushes includes an offset and extending end portion, said end portion serving to abutt with one of said screws which provides said adjusting means means for closing said arms and said brushes together or increasing the space therebetween and said arms containing said brushes in combination with said concaved brushes serve to cover the entire peripheral surface of the ball carried within said head in order to efficiently wash said ball.
4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said ball is placed within said head by spreading said arms apart and when said brushes of said arms are in engagement with the outer peripheral surface of said ball springs are placed upon the outer end surfaces of said arms so as to springly urge said brushes and arms towards said ball so that when said machine is operated, said ball will be thoroughly washed when the machine carrying said head is turned to the on position.
