This invention relates to a spectacle lens cleaner with removable wipers.

More specifically speaking the present invention pertains to that class of spectacle lens cleaners or wipers wherein wiping members are provided which are yieldably supported in a face to face adjacent relation to each other so as manually to be pressed against the opposite faces of a lens to be wiped between them, the wipers being made of chamois skin or other flexible sheet material.

Heretofore, so far as I am aware, no satisfactory provision has been made for quickly and conveniently removing a soiled wiping element and replacing it with a fresh one. It is, therefore, an important object of the present invention to provide a practical means for detachably mounting the wiping elements upon a handle portion of the device; so that, when said wiping elements become soiled they may conveniently be replaced with new ones without delay and inconvenience and clean wiping again be done, this being accomplished without discarding the handle portion of the device.

In its broader aspect the invention comprises a handle portion consisting of two arms approximately parallel throughout the greater part of the length of said handle and having inwardly offset, normally approximately contracting free end portions which can be manually spread apart from each other, and a lens wiper member detach-ably connectible with each of said free end portions by means of a socket and cooperating socket held part.

Accordingly another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of this character, a handle member provided with :an open-ended socket, adapted detac hably to receive a part of a lens wiping member, which can be manufactured at so low a price as to be, without compunction, discarded when soiled and replaced with a new wiping member.

Still another object is to provide a superior means for normally mounting a pair of lens wiping elements in a face-to-face contact so as to keep them clean when not in use.

Other objects, advantages and features of invention will hereinafter appear.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention,

Fig. 1 is an edge elevation of the complete device, illustrating the manner of using the same.

Fig. 2 is an extended, perspective view showing the device on a larger scale than it is shown in the remaining views.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the body or handle portion 5 of the device comprises a strap of form retaining somewhat resilient sheet material, desirably plastic, arcuately bent across its midlength portion and which therefore assumes approximately an attenuated U shape, having twin arms 5 joined by the arcuate bend 1. Each of said arms has a free terminal portion 8 which is inwardly offset from the remainder of the arm by means of a short inclined run 9. Said terminal portion 8 has at each side an outwardly doubled over flange it directed toward the midwidth of said handle portion, these flanges cooperating to form, at the free end of each arm '5, 2. socket l i shaped to have removably fitted into it the radial arm 12 of the annular part 13 at that side of the device, which carries the cleaner disk or pad M. This pad consists of a circular piece of soft, flexible sheet material, desirably ch-amois skin, having a diameter considerably greater than the space l5 enclosed by the annular part l3 which carries it, so that the peripheral portion of said piece l4 may abut flatwise against said part l3 and be secured thereto by an adhesive or otherwise.

As illustrated in Fig. l, the circular holes [5 through the members l3 enable the operator to use the tips of his forefinger and thumb to press the wipers l4 against the opposite faces of the lens l6 being cleaned, while he moves said wipers in a manner causing them to cleanse the lenses. The arms 6 normally hold the wiping pads in a face-to-f-ace contact with each other when the device is not in use, thus keeping dust from accumulating on their wiping faces.

Modifications of the device may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the claimed invention.

I claim:

A spectacle lens wiper comprising a handle consisting of two arms united to each other at one end of the handle and having free end portions capable of being swung toward and from contact with each other, each of said arms comprising a strap of form retaining sheet material and having at its free end a pair of flanges bent back toward its midwidth and cooperating to form a socket with an open end, and an annular carrier for a lens wiper, said annular carrier consisting of a flat plate having a radial arm which is removably fitted within said socket.
