Primary Examiner-Henry K. Artis Attorney-Kurt Kelman [5 7] ABSTRACT A swimming pool construction having improved means for initially waterproofing adjoining sections of pool liners as well as to simplifying repair of damaged areas of joinder is disclosed. In pools of this general type bottom and side wall waterproof liners are held in position and rendered waterproof by shaped moldings clamped thereagainst. The invention simplifies installation and repair by providing the shaped moldings with ledges spaced from the pool walls or bottom to provide grooves or openings therebetween to receive edges, of liners, sealing strips and sealing compound.
4 Claims, 1 Drawing Figure SWIMMING POOL The present invention relates to improvements in prefabricated and transportable basins or pools.
U.S. Pat. No. 3,641,595 granted Feb. 15, 1972, to Hans Viessmann and entitled Prefabricated and Transportable Basins or Pools relates to a swimming pool having a waterproof bottom lining and vertically corrugated side-wall sections whose upper and lower edges are held by supporting members and which are lined on their inside surfaces with a waterproof lining with the waterproof linings in the area of the lower supporting members, each of which have a flange at the bottom extending inwards, being joined in waterproof connection by means of shaped moldings.
One inherent problem with this type of pool whose waterproof walls, generally speaking, consist of individual sections, is the sealing of the junctions or points of joinder of the individual sections, in which consideration must be given to the facts that such types of pools always have some degree of internal movement and that the sealing agent employed must be easy and economical to manufacture and also be capable of quick and easy repair.
The shaped moldings which described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,641,595 are used for expediency in association with adhesive tapes, which somewhat complicates the construction because installing and repairing these watertight connections involves assembly and disassembly of the shaped moldings. If the shaped moldings are used without the adhesive strips, then watertight sealing of the pool cannot be positively guaranteed.
it has also been proposed already by way of improve ment to solve the sealing problem in a simple manner by a method of providing the shaped moldings with grooves or ledges opening towards the linings, and in which a sealing compound, for example silicone rubber, is filled.
With multi-sectional bottom linings, the lining-sections can also be sealed by providing the shaped moldings downwardly facing grooves or ledges which are open on the side facing the lining sections to receive a suitable sealing compound.
It has now been discovered that in the assembling of a pool both the waterproofing and the appearance of these sectional molded sealings can be more substantially improved if one does not fasten the shaped moldings with screws whose heads also have to be sealed with a sealing compound as has been the practice to date, but instead attachs the shaped moldings right from the beginning of the pool construction directly to flanges on the sides of the pool tank, with the moldings being shaped to provide grooves for clamping and for holding the sealing compound, providing the advantage that the pool linings can be inserted and fastened in the grooves with sealing strips with the remaining portions of the grooves then being filled with a suitable sealing compound.
The same procedure is applicable to both bottom and side wall moldings.
Using this form of construction it is possible to initially and completely assemble the pool without having regard to the waterproofing of points of contact and the problem of sealing them. After erection of the pool assembly the grooves are then filled by inserting sealing strips and sealing compound.
lf subsequent damage to the pool should occur it is then not necessary to disassemble the pool tank nor to remove theshaped moldings but instead all that is requ- I ried is to clean the old sealing compound from the damaged portion of the groove and to apply fresh sealing compound.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic illustration of one Fmbodiment of a pool bottom corner wedge.
The present invention relates to improvements in the pool construction of the type described in U.S. Pat. No.
. ledges spaced from the bottom of the pool to provide longitudinal grooves or openings to receive edges of adjacent bottom liner sections and sealing strips and sealing compound.
The shaped moldings 19 are firmly joined to the flanges 12, 17, for example by means of rivets 21, and are delivered to the building site already fastened together.
The shaped moldings 19 are provided with ledges providing openings or grooves facing the linings 4 and 5 (or the multi-sections of lining 5 as applicable) and into which a sealing compound 45, for example silicone rubber, can be applied, after sealing strips 44 and the linings 4 and 5 have been inserted to clamp the lining edges. The shaped molding 19 can, by way of example, be made of glass fibre reinforced polyester resin. A decisive factor in the selection of the sealing compound 45 is that it should retain a lasting degree of plasticity.
This type of sealing naturally can also be adapted for use in appropriate form for the upper rim support of the pool or even for the sealing of the periphery of the pool where it meets the edge of a pool patio.
Obviously it is also possible to construct the shaped molding 19 together with the supporting member 3 in one piece, in which case a central portion 19' could be eliminated; In this case a side wall molding 19" (see broken lines) would be provided on the upwardly directed flange l7, and. a bottom molding provided on the inwardly directed flange 12.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as fol-.
lows:
liner and vertical side wall sections having upper and lower edges supported by upper and lower support members, respectively, and a waterproof side wall lining provided on inner surfaces of the side wall sections, and shaped moldings to maintain edges of the linings in position and provide for waterproof sealings, the lower support member being provided with an inwardly directed flange to receive thereon an edge of a bottom liner and an upwardly directed flange to receive an edge of a side wall liner, and a shaped molding securely fastened to the upwardly directed and inwardly directed flanges, the shaped molding having an upwardly directed ledge spaced from the upwardly directed flange to provide a groove or opening therebetween and having an inwardly directed ledge spaced from the inwardly directed flange to provide a ggoove or opening therebetween, the edges of the liners being positioned in the grooves, and sealing strips and sealing compound being provided in the grooves to provide waterproof sealing.
2. A swimming pool according to claim 1, having a multi-section bottom liner, and flat shaped moldings covering edges of adjacent bottom liner sections, the flat shaped moldings having laterally and oppositely projecting ledges spaced from the bottom of the pool
