Description
(No Model.) I B. C. FOSTER.
GASH BOX. N0.,374,149. Patented Nov. 29, 1887.
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN C. FOSTER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CASH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,149, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed June 24, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, BENJAMIN G. FOSTER, of Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cash-Boxes, ofwhich the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to cash-boxes having different compartments for bills and fractional currency; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts designed with reference to convenience, safety, compactness, and easy portability, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Figure 1 is a perspective view with the box laid open upon a table, and Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the box closed.
A and B represent the two sections of the box, which are made of sheet metal, and are hinged at their edges so as to form two equal halves, which may be laid open upon a flat surface or closed the one upon the other.
In the four corners of one of the sections A is soldered or formed lips or cleats a, upon which rests a removable board or tray, 0, having four (more or less) holes in the same, in which are seated detachable coin-holders D. These coin-holders are formed of a circular marginal rim or bead, c, and an attached pit of hemispherical shape, made of stamped woven wire. This forms a light and well-ventilated receptacle for the coin, which prevents them from sweating, and from which the coin may be readily clutched by the fingers. The'space in the section A beneath thecoin-tray is to be used for notes, checks, bills, receipts, or other papers handled by the cashier or person using the box. In the other section of the box there is formed a longitudinal partition, 01, which forms two compartments for banlrnotes, which are covered by two sliding plates, E E. These plates have flanges e e, by which they may be slid, and both their edges at right angles to the flanges slide in the same grooves in the boxsection, which grooves or guides are formed by two parallel and longitudinally-arranged flanges, ff, projecting from the side walls of the box-section. These two sliding plates when closed over the bank-notes below protect them against the wind, and said plates also form a convenient tray above them for counting out change or other use. If desired, wire clamps Serial No. 242,418. (1\'o model.)
may be attached to and form a part of these plates for holding notes and papers. Either of these plates may be moved inwardly toward the middle line of the box to expose either end of the bank-notes below.
F is a detachable base-plate, which has an 4 overturned edge, 9, atone edge, locking-catches h on its opposite edge, and ribs i on the sides, which stiffen the plate and hold the box in place thereon.
At one side of the bottom of the box-section A is formed a projecting flangeor lip, Z, and in the other side is arranged a lock, 3'. This base-plate is designed to be screwed or othcrwise fastened securely to a table, desk, or other support in such a manner that the cash-box may be locked down to it and there held against surreptitious removal. This fastening of the box detachably to this plate is accomplished in the following manner: The box is placed upon the baseplate, with its lip or flange lextending under the overturned edge 9 of the base-plate, while the bottom of the box is seated between the ribs 1' i.
The lockj is a double-acting lock, and when it is operated by its key itlocks both the catches B ofthe other section of the box and the catches h of the base-plate, thus simultaneously looking the box in closed position and also locking the box down to the base-plate, which is rigidly attached to the table, desk, or other support.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the perforated tray, of coin-receptacles located in said perforations and made of stamped gauze-wire with a marginal bead or rim, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the box-section A, of the box-section B, hinged to section A
