UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HOPE, OF OASTLETON, VERMONT.
lM PROVEMENT lN CAM P-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,399. dated January 13, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES HOPE, of Castleton, Vermont, have invented anew and Improved Camp-Stove; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, and to theletters of referenc marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap and portable camp-stove for the use of our ofticers and soldiers in the army, and to others who may have occasion to use them; one which, while it combines all the advantages of the common large and expensive stove, can be furnished at a greatly reduced price, and be transported with the greatest ease.
The invention consists in so forming a metalhc cover to be used over atrench dug in the ground that while it aflords all the advanta ges ofthe common stove forcooking, heating, &o, it shall present a good radiatingsurface tor warming an apartment, and be at the same time extremely light and portable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part ofthis specification.
The top or cover A is formed with a flange, B, which is designed to rest upon the ground, and with'the top part raised from said flange by sides either arching or standing atan angle. The smoke is discharged through the top A into the pipe D, as shown in the drawing. The flange B does not extend across the front end of the cover A, but the Wire F, which extends all round A to support and stifi'en it is seen in front, and is designed to support the door or slide G, which should be long enough to extend down to the bottom or near the bottom of the trench. The slide Gr may form the entire front of the stove or cover, with a drafthole through or under it, or it may have a door, H, as seen in G, and it may also slide in and be supported by flanges or grooves in A.
J is portable oven made to fit and to be used on the top of the cover A. K is a movable band, to be loosely placed on the top ot'the said oven when baking, for holding the coals. L is along bal (one on either side.) By removing the band K, J can be used as a boiler on the top of A; when turned the other side up it can also be used as apail. The cover A is fastened to the ground by pins 0 c 0 c.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The top or cover A, with its flange B, its its aperture (1, its holes and pins 0 c 0 0, its slide or door G, in combination, constructed substantially as herein described.
