Description

SHAVOR 8L CORSE.
Gridiron.
Patented Feb. v 19. 1861.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB SI-IAVOR AND A. C. CORSE, OF TROY, NEIV YORK.
GRIDIRON.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,482, dated February 19,1861.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB SHAVOR, and I, ALBERT C. CORSE, each of the city o f Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gridirons for Broiling Meats and Like Purposes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters of reference marked thereon and making a part of this specification.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the gridiron. Fig. 2, shows the solid side connected with the reservoir (C) each hereinafter described. Fig. 3, shows the side opposite Fig. 2, having openings therein, and hereinafter described. Fig. 4, is a transverse section showing the combination of all the different parts. Fig. 5, shows the reservoir (C) and the connection therewith of the sunken grate each hereinafter described.
Like letters represent like parts.
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement and combination of the several parts specially set forth in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described, so that when meats &c., are broiled therein and thereon the smoke and gases of thesame shall be conducted away and therefrom without arising in the room where the same is used.
W'e construct our gridiron as followsto wit, of a solid side (D) Fig. 2, projecting downward from the flange or projection (A), to any required or desired distance. This part is the front part of the said gridiron represented at Fig. l, and is connected at the lower part thereof with the reservoir (C), Figs. 4 and 5. This part forms a more perfect draft over the broiling substance and thereby enables the smoke and gases arising' therefrom to be conducted away in a more perfect and certain manner through the opposite and rear part (D) Fig. 3, having openings (O) therein. Fig. 3 is a side opposite (D) Fig. 2, hereinbefore described. This side contains draft openings (O) which conduct away through the same, the smoke and gases arising from the broiling substance. These openings may be of any desired size, and extend over the entire side (D).v This side projects downward like unto the side (D) and to an equal distance of the same, and then is connected with the said reservoir (C) in like manner, which sides when joined together form the downward projection of the gridiron Fig. 1, which part is below the top plate of any stove wherein the same is used.
The reservoir (C), Fig. 5, extends entirely around the said gridiron and is made of any size and depth required to hold the gravy issuing from the broiling substance. To the inner edge of this reservoir is connected the cross bar These bars are somewhat elevated in the center of the same so as to allow the gravy to pass therefrom into the said reservoir,` as well as to provide for contraction and expansion of the same during the heating or cooling thereof. These bars have channels or grooves therein for the reception of the gravy &c. These cross bars are the surface upon which the substance to be broiled is placed. (A) is a flange projecting outward from the said sides (D and D) and extends entirely around the gridiron and rests down and upon the top of the stove and holds the same therein, (a.) shows the division of the said parts, the openings between the grates. During the operation of broiling, the draft above the grate of the gridiron, and
