Definitions
- ABSTRACT Apparatus for the removal of detrimental matter from the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines in which a cylindrical drum having a substantially tangential inlet and an aligned substantially tangential outlet is disposed in the engine exhaust pipe for imparting a whirling motion to the exhaust gases in the drum. Th'e drum has an orifice therein at the side opposite from the inlet and outlet.
- a mixing liquid is introduced into the orifice adapted to be dispersed and evaporated by the exhaust'gases entering the drum from the engine manifold'to thereby cool the drum and the exhaust gases and at the same time to form compounds between the vapor and the detrimental matters prior to passing to the muffler.
- a dehydrating device receiving the discharge of the muffler is provided for discharging substantially pure air from thedehydracting device into the atmosphere.
- the principal object of the invention is to provide in such means a mixing device which is inserted in the exhaust pipe leading from the exhaust manifold of an internal combustion engine to the usual muffler, themixing device comprising a cylindrical drum having a substantially tangential inlet and an aligned substantially tangential outlet whereby the exhaust gases in passing through said exhaust pipe towards the muffler are given a whirling motion.
- a mixing liquid from a supply tank holding a quantity of water, phosphoris acid, peroxide of barium and peroxide of hydrogen.
- the mixing liquid dropped into the drum disperses and evaporates by means of the heat of the gases exhausted from the engine. As this evaporated liquid cools down the inner part of the drum the exhaust gas which comes into the drum from the exhaust manifold is also cooled down and its volume decreases, and a low pressure condition occurs in the inner part of the drum.
- the internal combustion engine l is provided with the usual exhaustmanifold 2.
- An exhaust pipe 3 connects the rear end of the intake manifold 2 with the inlet of a muffler 4.
- a dehydrating device 5 is connected by pipe 6 from the rear end of the muffler 4 to the inlet of the dehydrating device 5, which device exhausts through pipe 7 to the atmosphere.
- a mixing device shown more particularly in FIG. 2, the same consisting of a cylindrical drum 8 having a substantially tangential inlet 9 and an aligned substantially tangential outlet 10 whereby the exhaust gases entering the mixing drum 8 will give a whirling motion within the drum 8.
- the compound of the vapor and carbon monoxide, sulphurous acid gas, lead, hydrogenchloride, nitrogenoxide, carbon, dust, etc., which is discharged out of the outlet 10 is dehydrated and separated by means of passing from muffler 4 through the dehydrating device 5 in which calcium carbonate etc. is contained, and which device 5 is connected with the rear end of the muffler 4, and the pure air remaining in the dehydrating device 6 is discharged into the open air or atmosphere.
- Each of the devices i.e., the mixing device 8 of the exhaust pipe 3 which is characterized by its capacity of forming the compound of the detrimental matters in the exhaust-gas and the vapor into which the mixing liquid is transformed by the heat from the exhaust-gas which enters the drum 8, and the dehydrating device 5 of the detachable container which contains the dehydrator in which the chief ingredient is calcium, together form novel means for removal of detrimental matter contained in the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines.
- Apparatus for the removal of detrimental matter from the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines having an exhaust manifold, and an exhaust pipe extending from said manifold, comprising a cylindrical drum having a substantially tangential inlet and outlet disposed in the exhaust pipe for imparting a whirling motion to said exhaust gases in said drum; said drum having an orifice therein; means for introducing a mixing liquid into said orifice which will be dispersed and evaporated by the exhaust gases entering from said manifold to thereby cool the drum and the exhaust gases and at the same time to form compounds between 1 3.
- said detrimental matters comprising carbon monoxide, sulphurous acid gas, lead, hydrogenchloride, nitrogenoxide, carbon, and dust which are melted into the evaporated mixing liquid and form compounds with said vapor.
- Apparatus for the removal of detrimental matter from the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines having an exhaust manifold, a muffler, and an exhaust pipe connecting said manifold and muffler, comprising a cylindrical drum having a substantially tangential inlet and an aligned substantially tangential outlet disposed in the exhaust pipe for imparting a whirling motion to said exhaust gases in said drum; said drum having an orifice therein at the side opposite from said inlet and outlet; means for introducing a mixing liquid into said orifice which will be dispersed and evaporated by the exhaust gases entering from said manifold to thereby cool the drum and the exhaust gases and at the same time to form compounds between said vapor and said detrimental matters prior to passing to the muffler; and a dehydrating device receiving the discharge of the muffler for discharging substantially pure air from the dehydrating device into the atmosphere.
- said mixing liquid comprising water, phosphoric acid, peroxide of barium and peroxide of hydrogen.
- said detrimental matters comprising carbon monoxide, sulphurous acid gas, lead, hydrogenchloride, nitrogenoxide, carbon, and dust which are melted into the evaporated mixing liquid and form compounds with said vapor.
- said dehydrating chamber containing calcium carbonate.
