Abstract

701,517. Gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Sept. 12, 1951 [Sept. 14, 1950], No. 22674/50. Class 110 (3) In a gas turbine plant for utilizing solid waterbearing fuel such as bagasse, sewage sludge coal slurry, sulphite pulp mill waste, town refuse or peat, comprising a drier and separator in which at least a part of the water content of the fuel is evaporated and separated from the solid content, a combustion chamber receiving the solid content of the fuel from the drier, a turbine and a turbine exhaust gas heat exchanger, at least a part of the water content of the fuel evaporated in the drier is passed through the heat exchanger before being passed with the combustion gases through the turbine. The compressor 1 driven by the turbine 3 supplies air to the combustion chamber 4 which feeds the turbine. Part of the combustion gases are led off at 4a and recirculated into the fuel drier 5 to which the solid fuel is fed through an inlet 6. The mixture of solid fuel, recirculated gas and steam from the drier 5 is led to a separator 7 where the solid fuel is separated out and led, together with a small part of the gases and steam directly to the combustion chamber 4. The greater part of the gaseous constituents are led through the heat exchanger 8 and pass into the combustion chamber 4 where they cool the walls and then mix with the combustion gases. A byepass 10 connecting the outlet of the heat exchanger 8 to the fuel drier 5 is provided so that the mass flow through the heat exchanger may be increased so as to increase its heat transfer rate. The plant is designed so as to give the recirculated gases a temperature corresponding to the dew point at the entry to the heat exchanger. The fuel supply to the drier may be partially dried as described in Specification 666,692. The recirculated gases may be led into the primary combustion zone of the combustion chamber or into the duct between the combustion chamber outlet and turbine inlet.
