Abstract

1361315 Treating exhaust gases T NISHINOMIYA 2 May 1972 [29 June 1971] 20348/72 Heading F1B A method of removing pollutants from the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines wherein, before being discharged to atmosphere, the exhaust gases pass through a mixing chamber and a dehydrating chamber, a liquid agent is fed continuously into the mixing chamber and there evaporates and undergoes a reaction with the pollutants, and the products of the reaction are separated out from the gases in the dehydrating chamber. Interposed in the exhaust pipe between the engine and a silencer is a mixing chamber consisting of a cylindrical drum 8 having a tangential inlet 9 and outlet 10 so that the gases are whirled in passing through the drum. In the end wall of the drum is an orifice 8a connected by a pipe to a tank containing a mixture of phosphoric acid, barium peroxide and hydrogen peroxide dissolved or dispersed in water. The liquid flows into the chamber 8 continuously. Downstream of the silencer is a dehydrating device in which are pieces of pumice stone containing compound substances including silic acid, calcium carbonate, aluminium, iron and magnesium. In operation, the vapour cools the walls of the drum and hence the exhaust gases and a thermal reaction takes place at 800 to 1000‹C. in which carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, lead, hydrogen chloride, nitrogen oxide, carbon, dust and other pollutants form solid particles. The vapour is cooled in the dehydrating chamber, the water condenses and is retained along with the products of reaction which solidify under the effect of the phosphoric acid.
