Abstract

Jacket and trousers combination wherein the jacket has, along the waist, an inner horizontal flap and the trousers likewise have, along the waist, an outer flap intended to cooperate with the inner flap to prevent entry of wind beneath the jacket. For that purpose, a first fastener closes the opening of the jacket and extends down along the vertical edge of the inner flap while a second fastener interlocks the lower horizontal edges of the inner flap and of the outer flap.

6 Claims, 4 brawiiig-Figures The present invention relates to a combination garment and more specifically to a jacket and trousers combination.

Although the combination of the invention is primarily intended for wearing during very cold weather, the novelty of the garment lies particularly in the means applied thereto to prevent air from getting under the jacket. Consequently, an object of the invention is in the provision of a combination garment adapted to be worn in windy and cold weather.

Garments of this general type are already in existence but they have been found inadequate, particularly due to the fact that they are tightly held against the body of the wearer at the waist and leave little room for movement so that such garments are uncomfortable, apart from the fact that they become easily out of adjustment and have constantly to be readjusted whenever the wearer is bodily active. It will thus be appreciated that if the wearer happens to be involved in an activity requiring both arms, such as when driving a snowmobile, read adjustment of his garment is noteasily feasible so that he either becomes gradually cold or else has to stop his vehicle in order to readjust it.

I have consequently invented a new combination garment, more specifically a jacket and trousers combination wherein one is tied to the other at the waist in such a manner that not only will the combination entirely prevent wind from entering beneath the jacket but will allow bodily movements by the wearer without any maladjustment resulting from such movements, nor will the jacket become unduly loose.

More specifically, I have invented a jacket and trousers combination wherein the jacket has, along the waist, an inner horizontal flap and the trousers likewise have, along the waist, an outer flap intended to cooperate with the inner flap, when tied together, to prevent entry of air beneath the jacket. For this purpose, a first fastener is provided to close the opening of the jacket, the first fastener extending down along the vertical edges at the end of the inner flap and a second fastener provided to interlock the lower horizontal edges of the inner flap and of the outer flap.

The combination of my invention is preferably provided with a lace locking means along the free longitudinal edge of one of the flaps to tighten the trousers flap against the body of the wearer. This lace locking means may take the form ofa lace guiding passage running along the free longitudinal edge of the jacket flap from the jacket opening, this passage having lace apertures formed on either side of the jacket. Laces are slid in the passage, one lace running along the back of the jacket and coming out through the side apertures, and two other laces each having one end fixed to one of the FIG. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the combination garment of my invention, taken at the waist;

As aforesaid, my invention relates to a combination garment formed of a jacket 1 and a pair of trousers 3. The jacket 1 has the usual vertical front opening formed by opposed sides 5 and 7.

As best illustrated in FIG.2, air is prevented from entering beneath the jacket, particularly when blown by wind action, by a pair of cooperating flaps 9 and 11 provided at the waist between the jacket 1 and the trousers 3, both flaps being in the form of elongated flexible bands of textile material or any suitable type of similar material and being stitched or otherwise secured to the respective parts. I

As shown, a flat band 9 hangsfrom the inside of the jacket 1, being secured thereto as by sewing along the upper longitudinal edge 13 'with the free ends l5, l5 terminating on either side 5 and 7 of the jacket openmg.

The flap band 11 hangs outwardly from the trousers 3 above the belt 17. As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the ends of this flap band are left unattached although they may be joined together subject to the provision of a fastener now about to be described.

The flap bands 9 and 1 1 may be of equal width or, alternatively, the flap 9 may be wider then the flap 11. However, in both cases, the flaps terminate short of the lower edge of the jacket 1.

A first fastener is provided to close up the jacket opening, this fastener being made up of vertical series or strips l9, 19 of fastening elements extending along the sides 5, 7 of the jacket opening and down along the free ends l5, 15 of the flap band 9.

Also provided is a second fastener to join together the 'two flap bands 9, 11 and made up of horizontal series or strips of fastening elements 21, 21' respectively along the free lower longitudinal edges of the flaps 9 and l 1.

Suitable sliders are provided each to interlock the fastening elements of one of the two series or strips. These sliders, being conventional, have not been shown to prevent overloading of the drawings.

In this manner, it will be understood that when all the fastening elements are interlocked, air under wind action particularly will be prevented from entering beneath the jacket. It will also be appreciated that the two flap bands 9 and 11 will act as a bellows, allowing free movements of the arms or body without maladjustment of the garment at the waist or discomfort to the wearer.

In order to render the garment even more secure against entry of air beneath the jacket as well as reducing the looseness of the jacket at the waist, a lace locking means is provided to firmly apply the inner band 1 1 against the wearers waist as best seen in FIG. 3. This locking means, as shown, is formed of a lace guiding passage 23 running from the jacket opening along the free longitudinal edge of the flap band 9, the said passage 23 having a pair of side apertures 24 on either side of the jacket with respect to the front opening. The passage 23 and the apertures 24 serve for the guiding of I laces 25 and 27 (FIG. 4).

Lace 25 runs along the back of the jacket and the ends thereof come out through the apertures 24. A portion 29 of this lace 25 may be an elastic band to give the lace a greater stretching action.

Since the front part of the jacket is at times left open, two laces 27 are provided, one on either side of the jacket opening. Each has an elastic portion 31 of which the outer end is fixed at the end of passage 23 corresponding with the end 15 of the flap band 9 while the band and extending out through one of said apertures, and

self-actuating locks through which said laces extend as they come out of said apertures.

2. A combination as claimed in claim 1 wherein the free longitudinal edges of said first and second flap bands stand short of the lower edge of said jacket.

3. A combination as claimed in claim 2 wherein said jacket, on either side of said vertical opening, has ex other ends come out through the side apertures 24 of tensions projecting outwardly beyond and over said sethe passage 23.

27 and 29 are passed through self-actuating locks 33, of known construction, adapted automatically to clamp the laces and releasing their clamping action under the pressure made upon a button or the like.

Thus one hand may pull on the

25, 27 while fingers of the other hand hold on to the corresponding lock 33 until the laces are sufflciently tight. The clamping pressure may be released by pressing on a button or other actuating device of the locks 33.

I claim:

1. A jacket and trousers combination comprising:

a. a jacket intended to cover a wearer. from the waist up and formed with a vertical opening, and a pair of trousers of which the waist comes up beneath the lower part of the said jacket when worn in combination therewith;

b. a first flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material hanging from the inside of said jacket at the said lower part to cover the waist 1 completely and having transverse ends terminating on either side of said jacket opening;

0. a second flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material outwardly hanging from said trousers at and completely around the waist thereof;

d. a first fastener for closing up said frontal opening,

said first fastener including vertical series of fastening elements located on either side of said frontal opening and extending down along said transverse ends of said first flap band;

. a second fastener including horizontal series of fastening elements running along the free longitudinal edges 'of said first and second flap bands and intended for fastening said first and second bands together along their free longitudinal edges, and

f. lace locking means to tighten said first flap band against the body of the wearer and comprising:

a lace guiding passage running along said free longitudinal edge from said jacket opening, and lace apertures formed along said passage on either side of said jacket;

laces in said passages, one such lace running along the back of said jacket and coming out through said apertures, and two other l'aces each having one end fixed to one of said free ends of said first ries of fastening elements of said first fastener, said extensions having releasable snap buttons for securing said extensions together.

4. A combination as claimed in claim 1 wherein said bands are of equal width.

5. A combination as claimed in claim 1 including rubber bands along said laces inside said guiding passage to allow resilient extension of said laces.

6. A jacket and trousers combination comprising:

a. a jacket intended to cover a wearer from the waist up and formed with a vertical from opening and having a horizontal lower edge;

b. a pair of trousers; said jacket having a length such that the waist end of said trousers comes up be neath it at a distance from said jacket lower edge;

e. a first flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material; said band having an upper longitudinal edge secured along its full length to and inwardly of said jacket at about the level of the waist end of said trousers; said band extending fully around said jacket and having transverse end edges terminating on either side of said jacket opening;

d. a second flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material, said band having an upper longitudinal edge and being secured to the waist end of said trousers only by said longitudinal edge and along'its fulllength so as to hang from said waist end of said trousers; said second flap band extending fully around said waist end;

. a first slide fastener for closing said front opening and including vertical series of fastening elements running on the full span of the sides of said front opening and extending down said transverse end edges of said flap band, and

f. a second slide fastener including horizontal series of fastening elements running along the full span of the other longitudinal edges of said first and second flap band and intended to fasten said bands together along said other longitudinal edges whereby, when said slide fasteners are closed, said combination is tight against wind at the waist while allowing freedom of movement by permitting said jacket to be lifted and/or moved away from the body of the wearer a distance about equal to the sum of the lengths of said end edges of said bands.

Claims

1. A jacket and trousers combination comprising: a. a jacket intended to cover a wearer from the waist up and formed with a vertical opening, and a pair of trousers of which the waist comes up beneath the lower part of the said jacket when worn in combination therewith; b. a first flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material hanging from the inside of said jacket at the said lower part to cover the waist completely and having transverse ends terminating on either side of said jacket opening; c. a second flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material outwardly hanging from said trousers at and completely around the waist thereof; d. a first fastener for closing up said frontal opening, said first fastener including vertical series of fastening elements located on either side of said frontal opening and extending down along said transverse ends of said first flap band; e. a second fastener including horizontal series of fastening elements running along the free longitudinal edges of said first and second flap bands and intended for fastening said first and second bands together along their free longitudinal edges, and f. lace locking means to tighten said first flap band against the body of the wearer and comprising: a lace guiding passage running along said free longitudinal edge from said jacket opening, and lace apertures formed along said passage on either side of said jacket; laces in said passages, one such lace running along the back of said jacket and coming out through said apertures, and two other laces each having one end fixed to one of said free ends of said first band and extending out through one of said apertures, and self-actuating locks through which said laces extend as they come out of said apertures.

3. A combination as claimed in claim 2 wherein said jacket, on either side of said vertical opening, has extensions projecting outwardly beyond and over said series of fastening elements of said first fastener, said extensions having releasable snap buttons for securing said extensions together.

4. A combination as claimed in claim 1 wherein said bands are of equal width.

6. A jacket and trousers combination comprising: a. a jacket intended to cover a wearer from the waist up and formed with a vertical front opening and having a horizontal lower edge; b. a pair of trousers; said jacket having a length such that the waist end of said trousers comes up beneath it at a distance from said jacket lower edge; c. a first flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material; said band having an upper longitudinal edge secured along its full length to and inwardly of said jacket at about the level of the waist end of said trousers; said band extending fully around saiD jacket and having transverse end edges terminating on either side of said jacket opening; d. a second flap in the form of a horizontal elongated band of flexible material, said band having an upper longitudinal edge and being secured to the waist end of said trousers only by said longitudinal edge and along its full length so as to hang from said waist end of said trousers; said second flap band extending fully around said waist end; e. a first slide fastener for closing said front opening and including vertical series of fastening elements running on the full span of the sides of said front opening and extending down said transverse end edges of said flap band, and f. a second slide fastener including horizontal series of fastening elements running along the full span of the other longitudinal edges of said first and second flap band and intended to fasten said bands together along said other longitudinal edges whereby, when said slide fasteners are closed, said combination is tight against wind at the waist while allowing freedom of movement by permitting said jacket to be lifted and/or moved away from the body of the wearer a distance about equal to the sum of the lengths of said end edges of said bands.
