JAMES E. ATWOOD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVED KNAPSACK-COLLAR.
Specification forming part ol" Letters Patent No. 37,146. dated December 16, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs E. Arvvoon, of Washington city, District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knapsacli-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the followingI is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making` a part of this specitication.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching tothe top ed ge of any ordinary knapsack a heavy leather collar, to bc stitched ou or riveted to the knapsack, the collar to t ing down infront, to which any kind oi' straps or cords may be attached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to dcscribe its construction and operation.
A represents an ordinary or common knal sack B, the collar, which is made ofstout har- 1 e is-leather, and stitched or riveted to the top edge of the knapsack. The center of the collar is cut rounding, so as to tit closely to the back of the neck, and the ends O extend downward some six or eight inches, with copl per rivets I) on the ends, to which straps or cords are intended to be attached. E are leather loops riveted on the collar, through which straps are to be passed to secure the blanket on top of knapsack.
The advantages of this collar are, that it brings the Weight to bear more equally upon the breast and shoulders, with greater ease and comfort tothe soldier than when it is al lowed to fall belouT the shoulders and rest mainly on the sides and hips. This collar not only prevents the rain from running down between the linapsack and back ot' the soldier, but relieves the shoulders from the Weight ot' the lnusket; and this collar can be attached to all the ordinary knapsacks now in use in the army.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The use ot' a stift' leather collar, constructed as described, when combined and arranged, in the manner set forth, with a knapsack.
, JAMES E. ATWOOD. Witnesses J. FRANKLIN REIGART, J. B. HALL.
