Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOSEPH SHORT, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO OHAS. SHORT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED SUNG FOR CARRYlNG BLANKETS AND OVERCOATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,002, dated April 15, 1862.
T 0 all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SHORT, of Salem, in the county of EsseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Officers Blanket and Overcoat Sling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this my specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and in which- Figure 'l is a View showing the sling in proper position upon the shoulders and back of a soldier and with a blanket or overeoat suspended thereby. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved sling and in proper position to have an overcoat or blanket, when rolled up, laid thereon; and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the blanketstraps turned over the blanket or overcoat and buckled to the shoulder-strap preparatory to slingin g it upon the shoulders, as represented in Fig. l.
In the drawings, a indicates the shoulderstrap, which may be of any proper material and three inches in width by three feet in length, between the buckles a', which receive the ends of the blanket-straps, as shown in Figs. l and 3.
The buckles d are permanently attached to the shoulder-strap, as shown, below which point the blanketstraps b extend down a sufcient length to embrace an ordinary military blanket and overcoat, when rolled up, in the condition as seen in Fig. l.
I prefer to make the shoulder-strap and blanketstraps in one connected piece of leather or other proper material, and I connect therewith cross-straps b b3, having their ends made into loops b2, by means of which they are run up upon the straps b, said straps b passing through said loops. Thus the crossstraps b b3 may be adjusted so as to confine sling rises from beneath the pit of one arm up in front of and over its shoulder, thence around the nape of the neck, thence down over and in front of the other shoulder, and terminating in its descent at a point beneath the pit of the other arm. The weight is thus properly suspended upon the soldier and in a manner which gives the greatest ease to the wearer, leaving the entire muscles of the chest free and unconstrained. I thus produce a most necessary appendage adapted to forced marches of the soldier under circumstances where it becomes imperative to throw aside the ordinary knapsack, and yet where the blanket or overcoat is indispensable.
Having thus described my said invention, whatI claim as new therein, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
As a new article of manufacture, the oliicers overcoat and blanket sling, as and for the purpose described.
