Description

DAVID KAUFMAN, OF MOHICANVILLE, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 3,713, dated August 21, 1844.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DAVID KAUFMAN, of Mohicanville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in vashinglvlachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
The nature of my invention consists in placing a double set of rollers around on two concentric circles and causing the clothes to pass around between said rollers.
The construction is as follows: A box or reservoir (a) of proper dimensions is made. having two partitions therein, inside of an outer case with a space between them and the ends. A square shaft or bar (c) runs through these pieces and is fastened at each end to the end pieces of the boX. Around this bar as a center there is a circular slot (d) cut entirely through Vthe partition pieces, so as to leave the inner part (b) to be supported by the bar (c) alone; all around the inner edge of the slot (d) are situated rollers (e) the journals of which have bearings in the inner piece (b) of the partition (b). Any convenient number of these rollers may be placed in this manner around the circle, leaving a space open at the top; in the outer part (b) of the partitions slots (7L) are cut either radially or p perpendicular, directly opposite the journals of the rollers (e) above named. In
these rest the journals of another circle of" rollers (2') each one of which touches against one of the inner ones (e), their number being the same; they are pressed against the inner ones with springs or in any other convenient way. Between the partitions and ends are put cog wheels (7c) on the bar (c) which is made round at that point for the purpose of allowing them to turn freely thereon. A rod (Z) runs across from one of these wheels to the other through the slots (CZ), so that when the wheels are turned the rod moves around the slot between the rollers. To the rod (l) the clothes are attached and are carried around between the rollers with it. The wheels (7c) are turned by working into two other wheels (m) placed above them on a shaft (n) supported on the top of the boX, and turned by a crank. It will be evident that when suds and clothes are put int-o this machine the motion of the clothes will be continuous till they are cleansed. Bands can be substituted for the gearing.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim therein as new and for which I desire Letters Patent is- Arranging the double series of rollers (e and in a circle in the manner described, and combining therewith the rod (Z)""o-r other suitable carrier for taking the clothes around between the rollers in the manner andfor the purpose herein specilied.
