GEORGE S. JONES AND BENJAMIN F. KIDD, OF RUSSELLVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,004, dated June 1, 1875; application filed April 21, 1875.
.T 0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE S. J ONES and BENJAMIN F. Km), of Russellville, in the county of Logan and State of Kentucky, have 7 small detachable metallic rods that are passed through sections of rubber tubing which said series of rubber-covered rods form the periphery of the rollers.
In the drawing, A represents a frame-work in which are journaled two rollers, BB, the top one of which is provided with a crank, O,
i and a pressure-regulator, D. Said rollers consist of circular end plates E attached to the shaft F, metallic rods G which are detachably fastened to the outer edge of the end plates and connect the same, and sections of rubber tubing H through which the rods are passed, the said rubber-covered rods forming the periphery of the washing-rollers.
We are aware of the fact that ridged rubber rolls have been heretofore used in washing-machines; but our roller is of a different construction and secures additional advantages, in that the rubber'covered rods may be turned when desirable, so as to present a new .surface for the roller when the old one becomes softened or worn from use.
I is an endless or continuous bag which contains the clothes to be washed, which passes between the two rollers B B, and is suspended 1 below in the soap-water.
By means of the above-described arrangement is constructed a most thorough and efficient washing-machine, and one which can equally as well be used as a wringer. simply by removing the continuous bag from the wa ter, and compressing the spiral spring of the regulator by means of the set-screw.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new isp The washing-roller, consisting of the end plates E, the detachable rods G, and the sections of rubber tubing H, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described;
