Description

H. A. WOODMAN & M. PERSON.
Improvement in Lever-Power.
N0. 131,142. Patented Sep.3,1872.
mesh into the pinion O on the shaft B.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. WOODMAN AND MOSES PERSON, OF CHARLOTTE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEVER-POWERS.
Specification forming-part of Letters Patent No. 131,142, dated September 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY A. WOOD- MAN and Mosns PERSON, of Charlotte, in the county of Eaton, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Application of Lever-Power to Mechanics; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lever-power for running any kind of machinery with increased speed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of our machine A represents a suitable frame-work for supporting the various parts of our machine. B is a short rocking shaft, provided with a pinion, (J, and on each side thereof is a short shaft, D, all of said shafts being placed in suitable boxes on the frame A. On one of the shafts D is secured a lever, E, and on the other a similar lever, E. On the inner'ends of these levers are toothed jaws G G, which At the outer end of the lever E isa brace, H, attached at right angle, and from the upper end of said brace another brace, I, connects with the lever E immediately on the outside of its shaft D. From the shaft B an arm, J, projects upward and the other end of this arm is, by a pit-man, K, connected with a crank, a, on the end of a shaft, 1), which carries the belt-wheel L, and thus connecting with the machinery to be driven. On the other end of the shaft 1) is acog-wheel, M, which gears with a pinion, e, on another shaft, d, and on this latter shaft the fly-wheel N is placed.
This power may be operated by hand, .or any other suitable power. When operated by hand one man may be at each of the levers, E and E, or only at the lever E, if so desired; in this case the lever E being folded up, as shown, it being hinged at f for that purpose. When this lever is in use it is fastened by a hook, 7L. When other purpose is used it is connected with the brace H, at the wrist-pin '5 on the same. As the jaws G G, by the motion of the levers, are moved alternately up and down on or with the rocking shafts D D, a rocking motion is given to the shaft B, and through the arm J, pitman.K, and crank a. a rotary motion is given to the shaft I), which motion is very rapid, although the power employed to move the levers may be very small. The fiy-wheel N being on a seperate shaft from the belt-wheel shaft, and revolving at a much more rapid speed, also materially assists in running the machine with which this power is connected, with great speed, with a comparatively small or light motive power.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the rocking levers E E, connected by braces H I, and provided with toothed jaws G G on their inner ends,
'substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. p
2. The combination, with the rocking levers E E and toothed jaws G G, of the shaft B, with pinion O and arm J, pitman K, and crank a on the shaft 1), substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 5th day of July, 1872.
