Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. MILLAR, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
FULLING-IVIILL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7 ,579, dated August 20, 1850.
To all wiz-0m z'z may concern Be it known that I, JOHN C. MILLAR, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Machine for Fulling and Washing `Woolen or other Fabrics; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in running a horizontal Wheel Wit-h buckets or ribs on its outer face within a tub or cistern, said cistern also having buckets or ribs proj ecting from its inner' face toward the center wheel, as seen in the annexed drawing, leaving, however a space between for the cloth to roll in a mass as the wheel turns.
The improvement made is in avoiding all rubbing friction and consequently all Wear of the fabric in the process of fulling or washing this is readily demonstrated by turning the wheel with a bitof cloth or paper placed in the tub. A
I constructa circular cistern or tub A, of any convenient dimensions and place on the inner perpendicular side buckets or ribs projecting towards the center. The wheel B is also constructed with buckets or ribs and turns on a pivot by the action of the gears Gr, G, while the tube remains stationary.
lVhat- I claim as my invention is,
So arranging a vertical fluted or ribbed cylinder and fluted or ribbed concave that the rotation of the former on its axis shall cause the goods to be fulled to assume a cylindrical form and to rotate on its own axis by means of the friction of the tWo fluted or ribbed surfaces acting upon and sustaining in its position the cloth or goods as set forth.
