Description
(No Model.)
A. S. HOLLENBAOK.
IGE TONGS. No. 371,066. Patented Oct. 4, 1887.
WiZNESSES 1% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM S. HOLLENBAOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES M. GHRISKEY, OF SAME PLACE.
lCE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,066, dated October 4, 1857.
Application filed June 2?, 1857. Serial No. 242,701. (No model.)
T on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADAM S. HOLLENBACK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State ofPenn- 5 sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ice-Tongs, &c., the same being fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings. My invention consists of icetongs, 8m,
10 formed of j aws having eyes integral therewith,
with means for bracing the same.
It also consists in forming the several parts of the tongs integral, of suitable wire, rod iron or steel, &c.
Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations at a right angle to each other of a pair of icetongs embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indica!e corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents ice tongs, each section whereof consisting of a jaw, B, with a prong, C, an eye, D, and a handle portion, E, formed of a single piece of wire, preferably steel. A pivot, F, is passed through the eyes D of the sections and properly headed or otherwise secured, whereby the sections are connected, and the tongs may be opened and closed as usual in an art-icleof the class. The eyeD of each section is formed by 0 bending the wire in circular form, and the portion of the wire about said eye is bent, forming a loop or crimp, G, which strengthens or re-enforces the eye laterally and prevents it from springing apart or spreading;
also provides springs for the jaws, rendering them elastic, it being seen that the tongs are light, strong, durable, and inexpensive.
It is evident that the novel features of the joint or pivotal portion hereinbefore described are applicable to other tongs and grapplingtools generally of pivotal nature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I l. The tongs A, made of two sections, each of which consists of a single piece of bent metal, having a handle portion, E, a jaw, B, with prong 0, an eye adapted to embrace the pivot F, and a loop, G, above said eye, serving as a lateral re-enforce therefor, substan- 5o tially as described.
2. A tongs formed of bent metal, and having each of the pivotal eyes of its sections provided with a loop integral therewith and above said eyes, substantially as described, serving as 5 5 a re-enforce for said eyes, substantially as de scribed.
3. A tongs formed of bent metal and in two sections, each of which consists of a single piece of material and of a handle portion, an eye, substantially as described, and a loop above said eye connecting said eye portion with the pronged jaw part thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
A. S. HOLLENBACK. lVitnesses:
JOHN A. \VIEDERsHEIM, A. P. JENNINGS.
