CIIOTHES-PIN.
.T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JonNsoN Momns WlLLIAMS, of Parker, in the county of Yuma, Territory of Arizona, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes- Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to clothes pins of that type embodying movable jaws normally held closed by a spring interposed between the jaws, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a clothes pin wherein the several components are constructed from a single piece of material bent into shape to form two jaws which have portions continuous with an interposed coil serving not only as means for maintaining; the jaws normally closed, but also as a resilient fulcrum means for the two jaws.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clothes pin having movable resiliently controlled jaws which may be readily applied over an article hung on a clothes line and reliably fix the said article with such resistance as to overcome any tendency to disengagement while the pin is applied thereto.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure l is a perspective. View of a clothes pin embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof shown applied.
The improved clothes pin comprises three essential components consisting of two jaws 5 and 6, each having clamping extremities 7 and handle extremities 8, and an interposed coil 9 which operates to normally hold the clamping extremities 7 of the jaws in close relation and also as a resilient fulcrum means to permit the jaws to be opened by pressing the handle extremities 8 toward each other. The entire clothes pin is made up of a single piece of material, preferably wire, having an inherent resiliency, and the clamping and handle or pressure extremities 7 and 8 of each jaw are constructed in the form of open loops of approximately triangular form and contracted at'the center and fixed by one end 10 of the wire which is Specification of Letters Patent.

firmly bent therearound in a plane at right angles thereto. Both jaws are similarly constructed and the wire is continued from one jaw to the other at a point above or in rear of the secured extremities 10 of the two jaws, one side member 11 of each jaw being extended above or in rear of the secured ends or extremities 10 and formed into the coil 9 which is disposed centrally with relation to the openings of the handle extremities 8 and in a plane at right angles to the latter so that when the handle extremities are contracted or pressed together the coil 9 will not interfere with the movement of the said extremities. By arranging the coil 9 as just explained, an effective resilient action is set up with relation to the clamping extremities 7 and the latter together with the handle extremities 8 are also maintained in regular positions relatively to each other.
To render the clamping extremities 7 effective in securing articles of clothing on a line and to maintain the pin in reliable applied position, they are provided with outward bends 12 to form seats which unitedly have less maximum dimensions than the dimension of the clothes line and article applied over the line, as clearly indicated by Fig. 2.
The pin as an entirety may be suit-ably plated to avoid corrosion or oxidation, or the wire may be primarily of such character as to be non-corrosive. Any suitable means may be employed for forming the pin, and changes in the proportions and dimensions may be adopted at will.
WVhat is claimed as new is:
A clothes pin comprising two jaws each embodying a clamping and an operating extremity, both jaws being intermediately contracted and secured by the terminals of the material of which the pin is formed by closely looping said terminals around the contracted portions and the jaws also each having a member projecting from and continued into an intermediate coil located be tween and disposed in planes at right angles to the operating extremities of the two jaws and serving as a resilient means to retain the clamping extremities in normally closed position and also operating as a. fulcrum for said jaws, the jaws and operating extremities being each of open loop construction and the coil arranged centrally With relafrom their free ends being provided With tion to the open portions 01": the operating inner opposing seats. extremities so as to permit the latter to have a free compressing operatlon by clearing the JOHNSOL MORRIS WVILLIAMS' coil which projects thereinto When said op WVitnesses:
