Description

(No Model.)
' W; H. HENNE & G. TIPPIN.
THILL COUPLING.
No. 370,785. Patented Oct. 4, 1887.
' UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILSON H. HENNE AND GUY TIPPIN, OF DEFIANon, OHIO.
THlLL-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,785, dated October 4,1887.
Application filed June 24, 1887,
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILSON H. HENNE and GUY TIPPIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in thil1-c0uplings; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention pertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our coupling applied to an axle; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of our device with the various parts separated, but in such relation to each other as to render their proper connection readily understood.
a represents the usual clip for surrounding the axle, which is in the present instance formed or provided with a single stationary lug or ear,'a, projecting out in front in the ordinary way. This clip is also formed with a horizontal groove or socket, a", which receives an arm, b, upon which is carried the second ear, I), as will be clearly seen in Fig.2.
The thill c is formed, as is usual, with an Serial No. 242,415. (No model.)
ears and the thill-eye, a small washer, e, of
rubber, felt, paper, or other elastic material, being passed over the bolt between each ear and the eye to prevent rattling.
It will be at once understood that the ears (1' b may be separated and pressed together to fit a thill-eye of any length and to accommodate washers of any suitable thickness, while the construction renders the coupling as strong as in, ordinary cases where both ears are rigidly secured upon the clip. The shape of the arm I) and its receiving-socket is not material, and we will form it half-round, dovetailed, rectangular, or in any other shape deemed best or found most desirable.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the clip. a, provided with a rigid ear, a, and socket c of the sliding arm b, its ear I), and bolt 11, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILSON H. HENNE. our TIPPIN.
