BLANK AND DRESS MADE THEREFROM SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates, in general, to the construction of clothing blanksand, in particular, to a new and useful clothing blank, particularly for dolls dresses, which is printed or stamped directly on the material to be worked and, wherein the seams of the blank carry adhe-- sive which advantageously may be protected by an overlying stripwhich may be easily released from the adhesive.
The invention of the present case dealswith the provision-f a blank which may be :used by a child to learn the technique of production of garments as in play. One difficulty in affording a child a knowledge of r the commercial stencil-type pattern sets and their aprangement. The adhesive str'ipsare advantageously plication is that these commercial pattern sets require a skill for the proper transfer of the pattern onto the material or cloth to be worked and a very exacting skill for the neat sewing together of the pattern parts into the completed garment, and in most instances a child is not able to do this. Simpler sewing excercises cannot result in the imparting of sufficient techniques to permit the finishing of a doll s dress, for example, and they therefore do not offer the child any playful incentive.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a blank-carrying strip of material whichavoids the shortcomings of the commercial patterns inasmuch as the cutting lines of the blank are printed or stamped directly onto the material and these outlines include seams formed by areas of adhesive which facilitate the easy joining together of the parts of the blank into a finished garment. The construction eliminates the transfer or tracing of the pattern onto the material and also the work of cutting out the blank since it is already prestamped. A special feature of the construction is that the difficult work of sewing need not be done in view of the fact that the blanks are constructed so that they may be joined together by seamed areas which include adhesive for this purpose. The seam areas are advantageously provided with the adhesive on one side and an imprint of the preferred seam line in broken lines or'in embossment to simulate thedesired look of an actual piece of clothing on the other side. The blank of the invention is advantageously formed so that an exact fit of the overlapping seams is facilitated and also an esthetically advantageous impression of the real seam is created. A corresponding marking, for instance in the form of an imprinted white strip, can be applied on adhesive strips on the left side for the formation of hems and edges by folding the material in the correct width. On the other hand, a gluing agent which is located on the seam line advantageously forms a visible or decorative strip and it will remain plastic when known materials of this nature are employed.
A further feature of the invention is that the blank for a dolls dress, for example, may be a one-piece already cut blank having a front portion with side edges each merging with one side edge of a respective sleeve portion, with the other side edge of each sleeve portion merging with a side edge of a respective back portion. The back portions diverge outwardly and havelopposite side edges which are intended to form the edges of aslit in the back of the resultant dress. The back portions are folded on to the front portion, and the sleeve portions are folded over on each other, with the juxtaposed side made along the seam line areas so that the adhesive will lie under the corresponding seam lines. In some in-' stances, the seam lines advantageously include laterally extending gripping flaps which carry adhesive and which may be joined together by juxtaposing the adhesive sides thereof. With this simple manipulation the two edges of the garmentare brought into alignment and the complete connection is effected merely by pressing the parts'together. In the preferred form, the connecting flaps of different pairs of gripping pieces have distinct markings or letters or are made of distinct contours in order that a child may easily see which of the two parts fit together.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved blank construction, particularly for facilitating the formation of a garment by a child which includes the form of the parts of the garment imprinted directly on the material to be worked and wherein the material is cut away at the location of the imprint and includes seam areas having adhesive which, when the garment is assembled, may be juxtaposed in order to hold the parts in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dress blank for facilitating the play and education of a child which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which there is illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE. DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a length of cloth imprinted with a blank in accordance with the invention; and
FIG. 2 is a front perspective view of a garment Y formed from the blank indicated in FIG. 1 and with the Referring to the drawings, in particular, the invention embodied therein in FIG. 1 comprises a length of cloth 1 which is printed with a blank 2 of a doll dress of a type which, when assembled, will appear as indicated in FIG. 2. In the preferred form of the invention, the blank is stamped out or cut away from the cloth material 1 so that even this chore need not be performed by the child.
The blank 2 is composed of a single piece which includes a front portion 3, sleeve portions 4 and 5, and
back portions 6 and 7. After the blank is cut away from the cloth 1, it may be folded for assembly in the manner visible in FIG. 2 so that its matching pairs of scam areas or edges having adhesive, namely 8a and 8b and also 9a and 9b, may be manipulated so that they may be arranged in juxtaposition with their coated sides in adhesive engagement.
The manipulation of the parts of the dress may be facilitated by the use of gripping pieces or marking tabs B and A. The child may hold one of the gripping pieces A or B and place it over the opposite gripping piece in order to locate the adhesive seam edges 8a and 8b and 9a and 9b in juxtaposition and then he may press these edges together in order to complete the securing of the dress in the completed form. Alternatively, the gripping areas A and B may themselves be coated with adhesive and they may be formed as an ornamental portion of the garment or they may be cut away after they perform the purpose of aligning the two dress parts together.
A feature of the construction is that the seam areas 8a and 8b and 9a and 9b are formed on the exterior or visible side when the garment is completed in a manner such that this area shows a seam resembling appearance, for example, by punctiform impressions 10. In addition, the hem edges and trims 11, 12, l3, l4 and are formed as adhesive strips on one side which permits their juxtaposition and their engagement and the exterior side or side which will be visible when the two seam areas are juxtaposed is formed with a visible seam impression. The hems ll, 12, 13 and 15 may be affixed to the blank 2 in one piece as edged strips which are completed by folding over outwardly and pressing together of the glue areas.
The two back portions 6 and 7 of the blank 2, as indicated in FIG. 1, when joined together form a continuous back slit 16 which facilitates the slipping on of the dress onto a doll.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the inventive principles, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
