PAPER DOLL.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EFFIE G. G. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Dolls, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys and particularly to paper dolls.

An object of this invention is to provide novel means whereby dresses and ornaments may be produced for dolls in which said apparel may be applied to or removed from the doll, the said invention also including novel means whereby the apparel is produced by cutting paper or sheet material in configurations which, when folded, represent the front and back of the garments which can be hung over or applied to the doll so as to simulate underclothing, dresses and other apparel.

By the use or employment of the invention, it is possible for children to acquire a knowledge of decoration and a knowledge of color blending as well as developing an artistic trend while at the same time being amused and entertained.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation'of the doll;

be employed in making the representation of ribbons;

Fig. 9 illustrates a view showing the manner of folding the sheet shown in Fig. 8; and

Figs. 10, 1.1, 12, 13 and 14 illustrate pat terns which are delineated on the folded sheets to be out to produce the garments.

In these drawings 15 denotes a doll which is preferably cut from relatively stifi material such as pasteboard, or it could be made of wood, suitably decorated.

In producing the garments to be applied to the doll, a sheet 16 of material is supplied with the lines 17 and 18 indicating the points where the sheet is to be folded, although in practice, these lines could be omitted and the sheet could be folded from end to end and sidewise in the center or approximately the center and the same result would be attained. After the sheet has been folded, it will present the appearance illustrated in Fig. 7 and when so folded, one of the patterns such as shown in Figs. 10, 11, 12 and 13 is applied to the surface of the folded sheet and the outline of the pattern is marked on the sheet. Thereafter, the folded sheetis out along the marks outlined on the folded sheet and when the sheet is then unfolded, a garment or the representation of a garment results, which according to the pattern used, will be of the general shape of those shown in Figs. 2. 3 and 4:, the same having a neck opening 19 through which the head of the doll is projected and the central portion of the garment then rests on the shoulders of the doll. To facilitate the application of the garment to the doll, the material is preferably provided with a slit 20 which will create a clearance for the reception of the head of the doll.

Prior to, or after the garment has been applied to the doll, the material may be decorated by crayons or water colors or other agencies and it is in this treatment of the material that a child is afforded oppor tunity to develop ideas in the art of deco- 5 may have the delineated garments differently ornamented so as to convey ldeas, which can be copied or enlarged as the child develops and becomes independent of the suggestions afforded by the directions.

The representatives of the hair ribbons willalso have colorings 0r ornamentations which blend with or match a garment which is to be applied to the doll, and the representation of the hair ribbon is produced from the blank 20 shown in Fig. 8 which is pref folded sheet and the outlines marked thereon to represent the line for cutting the material to produce the representation of a ribbon with a bow or rosette at each end.

I claim A new article of manufacture comprising a folder having illustrations of articles of apparel and decorations of said articles, patterns without decorations corresponding to the illustrations in the folder adapted to be used in 'cutting dolls wearing apparel, and a doll figure to which the apparel when out by the patterns will fit.
