TRIPLICATE MIRROR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,740, dated September 13, 1887, Application filed December 24, 1886. Serial No. 222,498. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN SALTAR, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Triplicate Mirror, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in triplicate mirrors having the side plates so hinged that they can be compactly and neatly folded when closed, and which can be set at various angles with the central plate when opened; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to render it possible to close either of the side plates first upon the central plate, the other then closing up compactly and neatly without strain or liability to breakage; second, to expose to View either the front or the back of either side plate, as may be desired, when the mirrors are closed. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whieh- Figure l is a vertical elevation of the triplicate mirror, the side plates opened wide andin line with the central plate. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is aplan showing the side plates set at different angles, and Fig. 4 is a plan of the triplicate mirror closed.

To the central plate, A, are hinged the arms D and E. To these arms are pivoted the side plates, 0 and B, at the pointsp. It will be seen by inspecting Figs. 1, 2, and 3that either side plate may be turned upon its pivot so as to present either its front or its back to view without moving its supporting-arm, and that either of the arms D or E can be swung in toward the center, and its accompanying'side plate, being pivoted, can be settled neatly and evenly upon the central plate. Afterward the remaining side arm may be swung inward, and its plate will, for like reasons, he settled snugly and neatly to its place in front of the first- Thus in Fig. 4 the side closed side plate.

l l i l plate B is shown closed first upon the central plate, A, the side plate (1 being afterward closed upon the side plate B, the three-plates thus being shut together flatly and compactly. In like manner, and with like results, the plate 0 may be closed first and the plate B last.

Fig. 3 illustrates some of the positions in which the side plates may be placed by means of my improvementspositions in which they could not be placed if hinged, as ordinarily, at the sides of the central the swinging arms as shown for the plate 0, Figs. 1 and 2-that is, two arms, an upperand a lower, D D, joined solidly together through the hinge-although for light mirrors and in certain cases a single arm, either upper or lower, may suffice. I may also in certain cases extend the two arms and join them around the side plate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by the junction of the arms E E around the side plate 13.

I am aware thatprior to my invention triplicate mirrors have been made having the side platesso hinged that they could be neatly and compactly closed together upon the central plate. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but

In a triplicate mirror, the combination ofa central mirror and two side mirrors, the latter being pivoted directly upon supporting-arms which are hinged to the central mirror, sub stantially as described, whereby either of the side mirrors may be folded flatly upon the central mirror and the other flatly and conr pactly thereon, and whereby either may be folded with either side outward, substantially as described.
