Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
CHARLES E. SVANEY, OF OAMDEN, NEX/V JERSEY.
PENCIL-HOLDER FOR SL-TES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,663, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed June 10. 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SWANEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camden, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Pencil-Holders for Slates, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to so construct a pencil-holder for slates that itV can be readily applied thereto, and is not likely to be accidentally detached therefrom, but can be readily removed when desired; a further object being to, provide for holding a pencil on both sides of the slate, and a still further object being to adapt the holder for application to slate-frames of different widths.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a slate, showing my improved pencil-holder applied thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same with the pencil-holderin elevation; Fig. 3, aside view, and Figs. 4l and 5 views illustrating modifications of the invention.
In Figs. l, 2, and 3, A represents part of the frame of the slate, and B my improved pencil-holder applied thereto, said holder being in the form of an elastic clip, which embraces the frame of the slate, the clip having at and near the inner end clamps a-one on each side of the slate. 1 Between each of these clamps and the adjacent face oi' the slate a pencil, X, may be confined, inwardly-projectlng lugs b intervening between the clamps and the body of the clip, so as to bear against the 'inner edges of the slate-frame and prevent the accidental detaching of the holder therefrom. To the outer portion of the clip is secured a spring, f, which bears against the outer edgeofthe slate-frame and serves to cause the lugs b to bear firmly against the inner edges of the frame, andthns retaintheholderrmly thereon, the use of the spring permitting the applica- Serial No. 240,912. (No model.)
tion of the holder to slate-frames of different Widths.
Although I prefer the form of holder shown in Figs. I, 2, and 3, there may, if' desired, be a pencil-holding clamp, a,'on one side only of` the clip; or the clamp for the pencil may be in the outer portion of the clip, as shown in Fig. 4, for instance; or the clip may be employed to secure a pencil-holding tube, 1', to the frame of the slate, as shown in Fig. 5.
I claim as my invention- I l. The within-described pencil-holder for slates, the same consisting of a clip carrying the pencil, and constructed to embrace one of the bars of the slate-frame and to engage with the inner edges of said'frame on opposite sides of the slate, all substantially as specified.
2. A pencil-holder for vslates, consisting of a spring-clip constructed for engagement with the slate-frame, and having at the inner or free end a clamp, between which and the face of the slate a pencil may be confined, all substantially as specified. 3. Apencil-holder for slates, consisting of a spring-clip constructed for engagement with the slate-frame, and having at the inner or free end opposite pencil-holding clamps, one for each sideof the slate, allsubstantially as specifled.
4. The combination of the pencil-carrying clip, constructed for engagement with the frame ofthe slate, with a spring for bearing against the outer edge of said frame., all substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OHAS. E. SWANEY.
