J. LO 0 H.
LINE PASTENEB. No. 356,691. Patented Jan.25 1887.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Unrrn S'rnrns n'rnn'r tries,
JOSEPH LOCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LINEFASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,691, dated January 25, 1887.
Application filed February 18, 1886. Serial No. 192,472. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Loon, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Line- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel and simple device for fastening lines, such as ropes and cords; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, hereinai'ter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectionin the plane 50, Fig. 2,01" a linefastener constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sec tion in the plane 3 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the retainingjaw.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the rope-support, which is provided with an eye, a, at one end, through which the line is se cured in the usual manner. Extending longitudinally across the ropesupport is a groove or channel, a, which is preferably of a semi circular cross-section, and is intended to receive the free end of the rope B, Figs. 1 and 3, and to hold the same in a straight line.
C is a wedgeshaped jaw, which can move in the direction of its length upon the ropesupport, and is guided by projections or guides D, which arise from the ropesupport. To force this jaw down upon the rope, so as to wedge the same between itself and the rope support, I mount a small bar or roller, E, in the guides D, which bar or roller can rotate in its hearings, and is arranged in a proper position to be engaged by the jaw 0 when the latter is moved in the direction of arrow 1, Fig. l, and owing to the converging upper surface of this jaw the roller forces the same downward upon the rope, whereby the sameis firmly clinched, and any eifort to withdraw the latter will only tend to render the grip more secure. The face 0 of the jaw O in the example shown in the drawings is provided with grooves or serrations, for an obvious purpose, Fig. 4.
To prevent thejaw from drawing out of the guides, small protuberances c are formed at its front end, which in such a case will be brought into contact with the guides.
To remove the free endof the rope from the fastener, it is only necessary to force the jaw back in a direction opposite to arrow 1, Fig. 1, which clears said jaw from the bar or roller E.
It will be observed that by the construction of my line-fastener the necessity of bending the free end of the rope is avoided, and the same is not liable to be thus injured, as is the case with ordinary line-fasteners The jaw and rope-supportclinch the rope along a considerable portion thereof, and consequently it cannot be out or otherwise injured by the jaw, and, as before stated, slipping of the rope is impossible, due to the property of the wedge.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a line-fastener, of the plate A, having the longitudinal groove A and eye a at one end, and provided at each side with a. laterally-projecting guide, D, the bar E, mounted at its ends in said guides, and the wedge-jaw O, slidable longitudinally between the guidcs, and having grooves c on its inner face for clamping the linein contact with the plate and the jaw, sn hstantially as de scribed.
2. The combination, in aline-fastener, of the plate A, provided at each side with a laterallyprqjecting guide, D, the bar E, mounted atits ends in said guides, and the wedgejaw C, slidable longitudinally between the guides, and having at one end the protuberances c for preventing the withdrawal of the jaw, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
