L. E. GOULD.
EAVES THOUGH HANGER.
Patented Aug. 23, 1887.
mania@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS E. GOULD, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
EAvEsLTRouel-l HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,828, dated August 23, 1887.
Application tiled May 20, 1884.
T0 @ZZ whom, il? may concern:
Be it known that I, Lewis E. GoULD, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eaves-Trough Hangers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to eavestrough hangers, and the purpose thereof is to obtain a simple, perfect, and exact adjustment of the supporting-arm vertically and horizontally, and to provide a hanger which may be used upon square, bevel, or ogee 7 finish indift'erently.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed out in the claims following this speciiication.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in the plane 2 2, Figl.
A in said drawings represents a bracketarm, which may be cast or otherwise formed of any suitable metal. Its end may be curved 'upward and provided with a vertical flange,
c, as shown in Fig. l, through which the attaching-screws pass. In order to lighten the bracket and cheapen its construction, superfluous metal is removed by forming openings at intervals in its body portion. Throughout the straight portion of the bracket is formed a longitudinal slot, a', and upon the face of the slotted portion, at or near the edge, is cast a projecting rib, b, the function of which will be presently described. Upon the opposite face the bracket is cut away to form a shallow channel upon each side of the slot, said channel lying between the projecting edges c c.
D represents a rectangular metallic loop having a dat oblong block, d, formed upon its rear side. The loop is of such thickness that it will pass through the slot o, the block d being adapted to lie in the channel between the edges or ribs c c.
E indicates the upright arm, which is cast or otherwise formed with a trough-hook, E', upon its upper end. In the front and rear face of the upright is formed a channel, E2, and upon the rear face the vertical ribs or edges, which lie upon each side of said chan- Serial No. 132,208. (No model.)
nel, are serrated, as shown at e, Fig. 2. The upright thus formed is inserted within the loop D, its serrated edges@ being next to the bracket A, and when it has been adjusted veru tically a key, F, is placed in the channel E2 and pushed downward into the loop. This key, being wedge-shaped, forces the upright against the bracket until its toothed edges eA or lowered, and at the same time anyl required.
'horizontal adjustment may be made by sliding the loop D in the slot a.
The upright arm may be lightened by forming openings therein at intervals. The troughhook E, mounted upon its upper end, has a loop, e', to receive the roll of the trough, and upon the extremity of the opposite arm is a recess, e2, covered by a iin of metal, e3, in which is formed an aperture to receive a fastening device by which the edge of the trough may be held. 1
The vertical and horizontall adjustment of the trough-hook is represented in Fig. 1 by full and dotted lines,
I claimmi l. In a trough-hanger,the combinatiomwith the slotted horizontal bracket having a projecting rib upon its face, of a vertical arm having serrations engaging with said rib, a loop passing through the slot in the latter and surrounding the upright, and a key inserted between the loop and the upright, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the slotted bracket, of the upright carrying the trough-hook, and an adjusting-connection moving in the slot of the brackets, witha key engaging said connection and forcing the upright against the horizontal arm, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 3.' rlhe slotted bracket having a feather, Zi, upon one face and channeled upon the opposite face, the upright having serrations e upon its rear face and a channel, E2, in its front, a loop, D, having block d, and the wedging-key F, combined substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. Atrough-support consisting of two parts,
IOO
one having a slot and a projection or rib on In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my one side of the slot, and the other part having hand in the presence of two *subscribing Wit- 1o projections engaging with the projection or rib messes.
on the first artsaid arts being held in connection by pa third eement which engages I LEWIS GOULD' With one part, passes through the slot in the Vitnesses:
other7 and is held by the action of a key or L. L. TILDEN,
Wedge, substantially as specified. G HAS. O. ELLIS.
