B O X O P E N E R.
SPECFCAN forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,516, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed May 5, 1887. Serial No. 237,275. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that we, ELLIsoN M. COOPER and HORACE E. Doeenrr, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a certain new and Improved Box-Opener, of which the following is a specication.
The object of our invention is to provide a device of simple construction for readily and effectively removing the lids or sides or ends of boxes and driving nails into and extracting them from boxes or othersimilar articles; and to these ends our invention consists of the combination tool or device arranged and operating in the manner hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The full nature and scope of our invention will, however, be more particularly understood, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein We have shown the improved device in a form found practically efiicient, embodying the essential features thereof, and in which-L Figure 1 is a perspective view of the same, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of a box having the lid thereof partially raised with our improved device shown in application.
Referring to the drawings for a further description of our invention, A represents a percussion device or rammer of tubular form provided with a suitable, handle, B. This rammer A is cored out to receive the cylindrical stem G. The lower portion, D, integral with this cylindriform stem C, is preferably constructed square in form to within a short distance of its extremity, and the top and bottom surfaces of the square portion D of the stem slightly taper to form a chisel-edge extremity. Into this chisel-edge end of the stem D is provided a slot, d, of suitable form or shape for receiving the head of a :nail and holding the same while being removed from the box. To the square portion D of the stem is pivoted a slotted plate, E, having shoulders e and f on the upper extremities thereof, and secured into the lower portion of this plateE is a pin, g, projecting at an angle thereto and having a conical or pyramidal point, h.
A erosspin passes through the slotted plate E and the square portion of the stem D, carthe point of the pin g taking hold in the sides or ends thereof and the shoulders c and f rest` ing snugly against the side of the lid, and by hand the rammer is moved backward and forward along the cylindrical stem C, whereby,
.after sufficient hold is secured, the required amountof leverage will be obtained for readily and effectively raising and removing the lid from the box. The extracting or driving of the nails into the box will be fully understood from the arrangement of the parts above described and from their simplicity of action without further description thereof.
It Will be observed that the heavier portion of the rammer is around the cylindrical stem C, so that the shock is not felt materially upon the hand, and hence the greatest effect in proportion to the Weight of the rammer will be obtained.
Having thus described the nature and objects of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. In a boxopener and nail-extractor, a stein the upper portion of which is cylindrical and the lower portion square in form, with a tapering extremity having a slot therein, in combination with a slotted supportingplate having shoulders on the free upper extremities thereof, said plate being .pivoted to the square portion of said stem, and a pin secured to said plate and projecting at an angle thereto with a pyramidal point, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The herein-described device, having a stem the upper portion of which is cylindrical, while the lower portion is square, with a chiseledge extremity having a slot therein, in combination with a supporting-plate pivoted to tho square portion of said stem, and havingr two shoulders formed integral therewith, a
IOO
pin secured in the lower portion of said plate, and aremovable ramming device fitting loosely onto the cylindrical portion of said stem, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The device herein described, having a cylindrical stem integral with a square bar with a curved tapering extremity, in c0mbi nation with a Ushaped supporting-plate pivoted to said stem and provided with shoulders, a pin having a pyramidal point secured to said plate, a hammer head suitably attached to either or both extremities of the pivot supporting said U-shaped plate to said stern, and a rammer fitted onto the cylindrical portion 15 of said stem, all arranged substantially as shown, and for the purposes described.
In witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
E. M. COOPER. H. E. DOGGETT.
