SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,093, dated December 20, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, AARON G.VV1TMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to hammers.

The object of the invention is to provide a hammer having formed thereon means whereby the same may be used for picking up and carrying objects from one place to another.

W ith this object in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement ".of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a hammer constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4:4: of Fig. 8.

Referring more particularly to thedrawings, 1 denotes the head of the hammer, having the usual pole 2, nail-extracting claw 3, and handle socket or eye 4, into which the handle 5 is secured. On the inner end of the handle socket or eye is an integrally-formed extension 6, which constitutes an elongated seat or eye, into which the eiid of the, handle is secured.

Formed on the upper portion of the extension 6 at its inner end is a short lifting-claw 7 which projects toward the nail-extracting claw 3 of the hammer-head and is curved or beveled to form a terminal biting edge 8, disposed in a vertical plane parallel to the ends of the claw 3. This edge 8 is bifurcated, as at 9, thereby forming gripping members between which and the end of the nail-claw the hammer may be engaged with the edge of a board, box, barrel, or other object which it may be desired to pick up, thereby facilitating the lifting and carrying of such objects from one place to another.

A hammer constructed as herein shown a id described will be found to be of great utility in handling rough boards, boxes, and the like, obviating the iiecessity of the same being taken hold of" by the hands. The increased length of the eye or socket also increases the strength of the hammer.

From theforcgoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes 'in the form, prrmortion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. The combination, with a hammer-howl having the usual poll and nail-claws, artl an elongated eye, of a bifurcated lifting-claw formed on the inner end of said eye and having a biting edge adapted to coact with the nailclaws for picking up and carrying wooden objects from one place to another,substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a hammer-hezul having a poll, nail-claws and an elongated eye, of a bifurcated lifting-claw casti'integral with the inner end of said eye and curved toward the nail-claws and provided with a biting edge to coact with the nail-claws for picking up and carrying wooden objects from one place to another, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a hammer-heml having a poll, nail-extracting claws and an integral elongated eye, of a bifurcated liftingclaw formed on the inner end of said eye and curved toward said nail-extracting claws, the end or edge of said lifting-claw projecting toward and adapted to coact with the nailclaw of said hammer and having a biting edge whereby the same may be used for picking up and carrying wooden objects from one place to another.
