Description

I. B. GUILD.
Nail-Extractnrs.
Patented Dec. 15,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES B. GUILD, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAlL-EXTRACTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,683, dated December 15, 1874; applicationfiled March 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. GUILD, o the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Nail Extractor; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of instruments for extracting nails, whereby the same may be withdrawn without injuring them; and the nature of my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the devices employed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable any one skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe my invention, referring to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents my invention in a front, and Fig. 2 represents the same in a side elevation.
A is a cylindrical shaft, of malleable iron or steel, provided on its lower extremity with a jaw, 0, formed in one piece with the shaft A. B is a rammer arranged upon shaft A, and of such a shapeas to facilitate the grasping of it with the hand for the purpose of raising and lowering the same, to cause it to strike upon a shoulder, F, formed on or affixed to the shaft A. O is a stationary jaw, formed in a solid piece with the shaft A.
'This jaw O is provided with a small hole for the passage of pin h, and also with an offset or shoulder concentric with the pin h. E is a movable jaw, attached to the jaw U by means of pin h, and fitting closely to the jaw O,
The upper side of the movable jaw E is more substantial than if the blows were transferred to the movable jaw through pin h. D is a handle attached to shaft A. It is provided with a ferrule, d, projecting sufficiently beyond the handle to form a recess, 61, within which is placed an elastic cushion, la, for the purpose of checking the accidental blows from theupward motion of the rammer B, which otherwise would have the effect of displacing or loosening the handle D.
To operate my device, put the two jaws G and E upon the place where the nail is to be extracted, and give the instrument a few blows with the rammer B to drive the jaws sufficiently below the surface to take hold of the nail; then tilt the instrument over so that the extension G can act as the fulcrum, which will cause the closing of jaws G and E, and grasping the nail tightly between them, and raising it out of its seat.
It will be observed that the extension G of jaw E serves as a fulcrum for the leverage of my device; but it also acts as a counter-weight of the movable jaw E, thus causing the jaws to be open and always ready without the aid of springs to open the said jaws.
I am well aware that nail-extractors have been made with movable jaws socketed into lever-arms. Such I do not claim as my invention. I am also aware of the patents granted to E. Brown, April 5, 1870, No. 101,424; G. U. Taft, December 30, 1873, No. 145,975 G. J. Oapewell, October 7, 1873, No. 143,496, and hereby disclaim the same; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a nail-extractor, the shaft A, constructed with the shoulder F, stationary jaw (l, and circular shoulder f, and provided with a handle, D, having a recess, 01, and cushion la, as described, in combination with the movable jaw E, provided with a circular bearing, E, and the rammer B, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
JAMES B. GUILD.
