Description

D. A. BURDETT.
GAN.
No. 368,510. Patented Aug.` 16, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEioE.
CAN.
SPECIFICATION fol-ming part of Leners Patent No. 368,510, dated August 16,1897.
Application filed June 22, 1887. Serial No. 242,194. (Model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL ADAMS BUE- DETT, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the village of Newburg, in the county of Lennox and Addington and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cans on which the top is in the shape of a cone; and the object of my improvement is to provide means of telling when a certain quantity of liquid, depending upon the size of the can, is run into the can. Iattain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures l and 2 are elevations of two different sides of a common coal-oil can having my improvement attached. Fig. 3 is a plan of thesame.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
A is the can, with a cone-shaped top, F. On one side of this top a hollow chamber, B, is fastened. This chamber B has an opening in the front closed by a piece of glass, C. There are also two small holes, D, one at the bottom and the other at the top of B, or one large hole through D, and when it rises to the height of the mark E, which can be seen through the glass O, the person lilling the can can tell the quantity of liquid in the can, knowing the size of the can. y
I make no claim to the shape of the can, and I am aware that prior to my invention cans have been made with glass fronts for the purpose of telling the quantity of liquid in the can. I therefore do not claim such acombination, broadly; but VhatI do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the chamber B on the side of the breast of a can with the glass front C and the openings or opening D D, substantially as described.
DANIEL ADAMS BURDE'IT.
