SASH-CORD FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,100, dated July 26, 1887.

To aZZ whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HERBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Cord Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sash-cord fasteners; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the edge of a sash,showing my invention in position for use. Fig. 2 is aside view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a'front view of the same. Fig. 4. is a rear View of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the'casting detached from the cord. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the casting with the cord therein.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the cord passing down the groove Bin the side of the sash O; and D is the recess or hole in the said sash at the lower end of the said groove.
G represents the fastener, comprising a cylinder, H, having a section or partition, I, across the same near the outer or front end, provided-with three perforations, L, shown in the drawings oval in form, to enable the same to be made larger to admit of an easier passage of the cord. In the edges or flanges of the cylinder are the recesses K, one of the same being opposite each of the perforations L and adapted to receive the cord A.
The end of the cord is passed through any one of the perforations from thefront or shallower end of the cylinder, returned through one of theother perforations, and again bent and passed through the remaining perforation.
It will be seen that a loop is formed'on each side of the section or partition, and through the loop on the rear or inner side is passed the end of the cord, (which is also on the rear or inner side thereof,) and therefore when the long end of the cord is pulled upon the said extremity on the rear side of the section will be bound tightly under the said loop and the cord willnot be drawn out of the fastener. The long end of the cord is now bent vertically made interchangeable from end to end.

My invention possesses advantages over similar articles of the kind heretofore invented, in that it is simpler, being cast in one piece.
It is not necessary to knot the cord before placing it in the" fastener. The cord may be put in the device in any one of three ways, and the fastener may be placed in the opening in the sash in any position, depending only on the position of the cord therein. The cord is less liable to slip, as it will be seen that the harder the same is pulled the tighter the fastener will become, and the cord can he placed in the fastener in less time and with less trouble than with said previous inventions, and when in and the device detached from the sash there is no liability of the cord becoming detached therefrom. By having the recesses K at both ends of the casting the latter is y the arrangement of the openings L the cord is caused to double upon itself, and thus 1naterially increase the holding of the cord to the fastener.
I 'am aware that it is old to construct a sashcord fastener with a partition having perforations through which the cord is passed and looped back; but I am not aware that the mode employed by me of turning the end of the cord through a loop formed near the end, so that the pressure or strain on the cord holds the end close against the partition, has ever been constructed before. Also, the double arrangement of recesses K at each end of the cylinder is a feature not known by me to be old.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

comprising the cylinder II, having an intermediate partition, I, provided with a series of perforations, L, each end of the cylinder on both sides of the partition I being provided with recesses K, which recesses coincide with the perforations L in the manner described, the end of the cord being doubled back and looped, so as to secure the cord in place without knotting, the recesses K at the end of the cylinderbeing designed to receive the cord, as 10 set forth.
