SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,246, dated July 12, 1887.
Application filed February 23, 1887. Serial No. 299,104. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT WALLACE PHILIPS, of the city of Guelph, in the county of Wellington, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, steam fitter, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to design a simple selfadjusting pipe-wrench capable of being used for various sizes of pipes; and it consists in the peculiar combinations and the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all substantially as hereinafter specified.
The drawing represents a perspective view of a monkey-wrench constructed in accordance with my invention.
A represents a metal bar, and O a j aw, formed with ratchetteeth cl and 6, respectively, the teeth 6 being set so as to point toward the handle end of the bar A, while the teeth cl point in the opposite direction. The jaw and bar are pivotally connected together by means of the links B.
The sleeves D are fitted one onto the bar A and the other onto the jaw C, and lugs f are formed on these sleeves to receive the pivots a and 11 The sleeve D on the bar I make adjustable, holding it in place by the set-screw E. In this manner I am enabled to adjust the jaw C nearer to or farther from the end of the bar A, asmay be necessary, in order to make the end of the jaw 0 even with the end of the bill IX.
What I claim as my invention is-- The combination, with the bar A and jaw G, of the sleeves D D on said bar and jaw, respectively, lugs ff, formed on said sleeves, and the links 13 B, pivoted at their ends in said lugs, substantially as described.
