To (LZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. ,DOUBLE- DAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinFoldingHead-Restsfor Oar-Seats; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in headrests which are designed more especially to be applied to car or other analogous seats, the object of the same being to provide a cheap head-rest which can be readily attached to the back of a car-seat, and which may be folded when not in use, so as to occupy but a small space, the frame of said head-rest being so constructed that the parts will fold within each other, and when unfolded the joints will contact, so as to form a comparatively rigid structure.

In the accompanying drawings, which illusirate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a headrest for car-seats constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the parts in a position to be applied to the back of a seat. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the parts folded upon each other, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view. 7

A refers to the center portion of the frame, which is made of a single piece of wire, which is bent centrally in a U-shaped form, the terminals of which U-shaped portion are coiled upon themselves, so as to form eyes, as shown at a a, from which the members a of said central section extend almost parallel with the central portion, the ends of the wire forming the center portion being formed into loops or eyes a. WVithin these eyes or looped portions are secured the bent ends I) of a section, B, which is bent as shown, and through said eyes I) is secured the ends of a bar, 13, which will'prevent the ends of the sections A and B from spreading or springing outwardly.

0 refers to a wire loop or section, the ends 0 thereof being secured to the eyes a of the'sec tion A, and upon said section is attached a covering of fabric, D, which may be filled with a suitable packing. This fabric, if desirable, may be formed so as to provideapocket, d, as shown in Fig. 4, which pocket may be used for carrying small articles, said pocket preferably being provided with a flap, d, which can be secured to the adjacent side of the fabric by a button.' It will be observed that the eyes or loops at the terminal portions of the sections 0 are so formed that when the head rest occupies the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the rear portion of said loop a will bear upon the back portion of the loop or eye a, while the inner portion of said loop a will bear upon the inner portion of the loop a, so as to maintain the section O in a vertical position and prevent it bending backward when pressure is applied thereto. The terminal portions a of the section A are attached to the eyes or loops b, so that the bars a will bear against the front upper edge of the loops 1), so that when the sections A, B, and O are placed in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings said sections will be substantially rigid upon each other against a backward movement, and by constructing the loops as shown the sections are not only secured rigidly to each other when the head-rest is placed in the position to be secured to the back of the car-seat, but they are also constructed so that when the parts are folded upon each other, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the sections will fold one within the other, so as to occupy but a comparatively small space, so that the device can be readily stowed or packed away when not in use.

In attaching the device to a car or other seat the U-shaped loop of the section A is placed over the upper edge of the seat, so that said section will be at the rear portion of the seat, the section B being at the front portion and the head-rest D at the .proper distance 9 above the back of the seat. WVhen placed in position, the spring-pressure of the section A will hold the device in position, and thelower loop-section will be pressed upon by the body of the user, so as to prevent the pressure upon the headrest tilting it backward so as to release the device.

When in use, the pressure of the head upon the textile head-rest will cause the ends of the sections A and O to be brought nearer together,

so as to allow the textile fabric to bag slightly,

so as to conform to the shape of the users head. 7

I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to construct folding head-rests as shown in Patents Nos. 299,361 and 332,154, and I do not therefore claim what is shown in said patents; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a folding head rest, a spring wire loop, 0, provided at its terminal portions with eyes 0, which project rearwardly, said section being provided with a covering of textile fabric, a section, A, bent upon itself at its upper portion, so as to form eyes, and provided with members a, the terminal portions of which are provided with eyes a, and section B, having eyes 1), adapted to engage with the eyes a, as described, and a connecting-bar,

13, the parts being combined and organized so that the sections will be rigid upon each other when opened, substantially as shown, and for the purposeset forth.

2. In a head-rest for car or other seats, the combination of the sections A, B, and O, which are secured to each other, substantially as shown, the central section being provided with a U shaped portion, which is adapted to be placed over the rear upper edge of the back of the seat, said section being provided with members a, which extend over the front upper portion of the vback'of the seat, so as to hold the head-rest in position and permit the same being adjusted verticallyon the back of the seat, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
