HEAD-REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,807, dated April 13, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE PHILLIPS, of Tilford, in the county of Jefferson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved headrest. tion of the head-rest. The object of my invention is to provide a simple, light, and portable head-rest for the use of tourists and others who require an easy support for the head.

My invention consists in a wire frame provided with a cushion for the head, and having cords attached thereto which are held by the feet, and which support the head-rest at the desired inclination.

The frame A of the head-rest is formed of two side pieces, a a, and a connecting-yoke, 1), into which the upper ends of the side pieces are screwed. The side pieces, a a, and the yoke 12 are formed of wire of suitable strength, and the lower ends of the side pieces are bent backward upon themselves and curved ontward, and are provided with eyes 0 for receiving a cord, 0?, and with bearing-plates a, which rest upon the shoulders of the user of the head-rest and form broad supports for the curved ends of the side piece, a.

The upper end of the frame A is inclosed in a pad or cushion, B, which is provided with wings or rolls G outside of the side pieces, a.

To the upper corners of the pad B are at tached wires e, having formed in them three eyes, f, one eye of each wire e being attached to the pad B, the remaining eyes being designed for the reception of the cords D. To one end of each cord D is attached a slide, e, formed of wire, with three eyes,f. The middle eye of each slide 6' receives the end of the cord D, and the cord, after passing through one of the eyes of the wire 6, is passed through all three of the eyes f of the slide 6, and the remaining ends of the cord D are provided Fig. 2 shows the applica with slides 0, like those just described, the slide of each end of the cord receiving the body of the cord of the opposite end in the eyes thereof, thus permitting of the sliding of the end of each cord along the other cord to shorten or lengthen the loop thus formed to adapt the head-rest to the different users.

My improved head-rest is applied to the person by placing the curved ends of the side pieces, a, upon the shoulders, as indicated in Fig. 2, and tying the cord d behindthe neck, andin the eyes cc,then bringingtheloopformcd by the cords D under the feet, as shown in Fig. 2. The wings O are folded over the wires e to conceal them, and over the pad B to afford an additional cushion for the head, and in case the user of the head-rest desires to rest the head against the side of the car one of the wings 0 may be unfolded and interposed between the users head and the side of the car.

The side pieces, a, of my improved headrest being screwed into the ends of the yoke 12, as described, their curved ends may be turned down parallel with the plane of the pad B and folded one over the other, so that the head-rest will occupy only a very small space among the baggage of the traveler.

By sliding the slides e c the length of the cords D may be adjusted so that any desired inclination of head-rest may be secured, and the side pieces, a, being made of elastic wire, permit of easily moving the head within certain limits.

To keep the cords D from spreading when in use, they are connected by a cord, b, which passes around the knees.

When the head-rest is to be used by ladies, the pad B is made concave to adapt it to the arrangement of the hair.

If preferred, the cords D may be shortened so that the user of the head-rest may sit on them and then hold the head-rest in position without using the feet.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, in a head-rest, of side pieces, a, plates a, yoke I), pad B, and the cords d and D, substantially as herein specified.
