Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES K. GILES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATCH-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,985, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed October 22, 1885. Serial No. 180,673. (ModeL) T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES K. GILEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVatch-Oases, which are fully set forth and described in the annexed specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a face view of a hunt er watchcase embodying my improvements with a portion of the front cap broken away; Fig. 2, a section of the same taken on the line a: m, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a sectional view of the movement-holding band or lining detached; and Fig. 4, a similar view of the center detached. I
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
My invention "relates to watch-cases, and has for its object to produce a dust-proof'case provided with a magnetic shield, whereby the movement shall be effectually protected; and to these ends my invention consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe, and will then particularlypoint out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the ring-center of a watch-case, preferably made solid, as shown, this center consisting of a body portion, a, provided at its front inner margin with a snap-flange, a, and at its rear portion with a threaded flange, a The center is also provided internally, nearits rear portion, with an inwardlyprojecting flange, a, and immediately underneath the same with an internal snap-seat, a B represents a movement band or lining, cylindrical in shape externally, as shown, and adapted to fit snugly within the correspondingly-shaped interior ofthe center A, upon the flange a of which it rests when in position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The interior of the band or lining B is adapted, in the usual manner, to receive the movement proper, andthe said band or lining is constructed of some highly-magnetic metalsuch as ironfor the purpose hereinafter described.
0 represents a back plate, which is likewise construeted-of some highly-magnetic metal, and which snaps within the seat a" of the case-center A, in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This back plate, in
conjunction with the band 13, provides an springs.
anti-magnetic shield to protect the watch from injury through the influence of electromagnetism, the theory upon which its operation is based being set forth in Letters Patent No.
289,642, granted to me December 4, 1883.
D represents the back cap, which is internally threaded at its margin and screws upon the correspondinglythreaded flange (6 of the case-center A.
'13 represents the bezel, which is provided with the crystal 0, the said bezel being secured in position by snapping over the flange a on the front of the center A.
F represents the front cap or plate, which is hinged to the center A in the usual manner, said center being provided with a catchspring, G, and a lift-spring, G, arranged in corresponding recesses g and 9, formed in the case-center for the purpose of receiving said All these parts are combined in the manner just described, and shown in the drawings, and constitute a dust-proof hunter-case watch provided with an anti-magnetic shield.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the case-center A and suitable back and front caps, said casecenter being provided with the internal flange, a, and seat a, of the cylindrical band or lining B, constituted of some highlymagnetic metal and adapted to fit within the case-center and rest upon the flange a, and the back plate, 0, constructed of some highly-magnetic metal and adapted to snap within the seat a", substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In a watch-case, the combination, with the center A, having the front snap-flange, a, the rear screw-threaded flange, a, the internal seat-flange, a and the internal snap-seat, a", of the cylindrical band or lining B; adapted to fit within the centerand rest upon the flange a the back plate, 0, adapted to snap within the seat a", the back cap, D, threaded to screw upon the flange a the bezel E, having crystal 6, and adapted to snap over the flange a, and the front cap or plate, F, hinged to the casecenter, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
