ALARM-CLOCK.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Baron, a citizen of Scotland, residing at Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm-Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in alarm clocks, `particularly of the cylindrical form and the object of my improvement is to produce a simple, compact, and very substantial alarm clock with a large gong bell at the back.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional viewof a clock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the front plate of the movement. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the clock shown in Fig. 1, in part broken out and part in section.
A is my improved alarm clock and comprises a cylindrical casing 10 suitable for inclosing the operating mechanism, provided with the stem 11 on the top and a pair of legs 12 at the bottom, is closed at the front end by the dial member 13 and closed at the back by the dust guard 14 and provided with the gong' 15 exterior thereto. The casing 10 has a strictly cylindrical exterior to the body portion and is pro-vided on the front end with an inwardly turned radial flange or shoulder 16, and projects forwardly from the inner edge of the said` flange suitably to support the glass in an ordinary manner.
The flange 16 is provided with holes 17 suitable for admitting screws 18. The dial member 13 comprises the dial 19, bevel 20, and a supporting flange 21 all in one piece and the supporting flange fits on the inner side of the shoulder 16 on the casing 10 and is provided with screw holes 28, that register with the screw holes 17 therein.
The movement has the usual skeleton framework suitable for supporting the operating mechanism and comprises a front plate 22. A plurality of posts 23, two of which are shown in the drawing, extend rearwardly from the said front plate 22, and may support a back plate 24, and serve by means of screws 25 to support the said dust guard 14 and gong 15, suitably spaced in an ordinary manner from the said back plate 24.

gong 15 are supported from the fro-nt plate 22, which also serves as a supporting plate for the movement.A The said front plate 22 is provided with laterally extending arms or ears 26 that are provided with screw threaded holes 27 suitable for receiving the screws 18 and spaced suitably for registering with the screw holes 17. The screws 1S are inserted from the front of the clock through the shoulder 16 in the casing 10, the holes 28 in the flange 21 of the dial member 13 and screwed into the threaded holes 27 in the arms 26, and serve to secure the dial member and the movement and connected parts to the casing. The dust guard 14 is a plate or disk'and curves forwardly from adjacent the supporting screws 25 and at the front end extends radially in the form of an annular, radial plate 29, the outer edge of which meets the inner wall of the casing 10 and fits the same, and fills the free end of the casing. The gong 15 has a curved outeredge 30 which extends forwardly, the front edge thereof being adjacent the dust guard 14. The back leg 31 is secured to the back of the gong 15.
As described, the dust guard 14 serves to close the outer end of the casing 10, or as a dust guard; as a reinforcement of the back of the case; as coperative means of support for supporting the rear end of the movement and the gong attached thereto. Furthermore, because of the shape of the dust guard 14 outward from the holding screws as described, an operating space is provided for the free edge of the bell between the plane of the back central portion, adjacent the holding screws 25 and the flange 29 on the dust guard and within the outline of the casing. In other words, the free edge of the gong 15 is protected by the back and the casing and at the same time has a diameter nearly equivalent to that of the casing.
I claim as my invention:-
1. In a clock the combination of a cylindrical case, an integral inwardly directed annular shoulder on the front end thereof,
and a dial member comprising in one piece having an annular flange, and a clock movement provided With a supporting plate having` radially extending arms, and common means for securing the said flanges, and arms to the Said shoulder.
3. In a clock having a ease the Combina` tion of an openV rear end and a clock movement supported from the front end thereof, the said ease being appreciably shorterl than the depth of the said lnovement whereby the said movement extends beyond the said rear end thereof, a dust guard supported from the rear end of the said movement and suitably dished to form a closure for the said rear end of the Case, and a gong eX- terior to the said dust guard and having the lateral edges entered Within the said rear end of the case whereby the said gong serves as the apparent and visible closure for the said rear end of the case.
