A WATCH GASE. No. 297,533. Patented Apr. 22,1884.

UNITED STATES DANIEL ofHAEA,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF WALTHAM, ASSIGNOR TO ROBBINS 8v APPLETON, OF
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATC H CAS E;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,533, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filed December 1, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL OHARA, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Vatch-Gases, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to watch-cases in which the movement is contained in a ring, which is externally threaded and screwed into the case-center, as shown in the pending application of E. O. Fitch, Serial No. 106,455, filed September 14,1883; and it has for its object to provide additional means for excluding dust, die., from the back of the movement.
To this end my invention consists in the provision of a back cap or bezel adapted to be screwed to the internally-threaded portion of the case-center, and cover the back of the movement inclosed in a movement-holding ring, as I will now proceed to describe.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a sectional view of awatch-case embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 represent, respectively, sections of the case center, the movement-holding ring, and the back cap or bezel disconnected.
The same letters of Areference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings@ represents the case-center or body provided at one edge with an internally-threaded portion, 2, and an externallythreaded portion or shoulder, 3, and atthe opposite edge with a seat, et.
b represents a ring adapted to contain and support a watch-movement, and provided at one edge-with an externally-threaded portion, 5, adapted to be screwed into the portion 2 of the case-center, and at its opposite edge with a shoulder, 6, adapted to rest on the seat 4.
f represents a removable front bezel or cover, which is preferably formed to snap onto a shoulder, 7, formed on the ring b, although, if preferred, said shoulder and bezel may be threaded so that the bezel may be screwed onto the shoulder, or the shoulder 7 may be formed on the case-center instead of on the ring.
The construction above described is sub- Stantially identical with that described in the application of E. C. Fitch, above referred to, 5o and of itself forms no part of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I (preferably) widen the internally-threaded portion?. of the case-center so that it will extend beyond the rear edge of the ring b, and screw to said ex 55 tended threaded portion a back cap or bezel,
m, which is externally threaded at 8 to engage with said threaded portion 2, and when screwed into the case-center effectuallyy closes or seals the rear portion of the ring and pre- 6o vents the possibility of dust or moisture obtaining access to the movement through the back of the ring. The application of the back cap to the same threaded portion in the casecenter that receives the movement-holding ring simplifies and reduces the cost of construction.
It is obvious that the back cap, m, may be entirely of metal, or it may be a glass-holding bezel. 7o
' I claim- 1. The combination, in a watch-case, of the case center having an internally threaded portion, and an external or outer-back, d, the movementholding ring screwed into said threaded portion, and the back cap or bezel m, screwed to the case-center, and serving as an additional protection for the back of the movement, the case-center or the ring being provided with a front bezel protecting the front of the movement, as set forth.
2. The combination, in a watch-case, of the case center having au internally -threaded portion, 2, and an external or outer back, the movement-holding ring, and the back cap or bezel, both externally threaded and screwed into the threaded portion of the center, said portion being suitably widened to receive the ring and back cap, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name 9o to this speciiicatiomin the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 23d day of November, 1883.
DANIEL OHARA.
Witnesses:
CHARLES F. STONE, REINHOLD MILLER.
