Beit known that I, CHARLES K. GILEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vatch-Cases, which is fullyv set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face View of 'a watch-case enr bodying my invention; and Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same taken on the line x x of Fig.1.

My invention relates to watch-cases, its ob ject being to provide a dust-proof case to protect the movement, and it is in the nature` of an improvement upon the construction set forth in my patent dated May 31, 1887, No. 363,817.

I will now proceed to describe a construction in which I have practically carried out l my invention in one form, and will then particularly point out in the claims those features which I deem to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent.

In the drawings, A represents the case-center, which is provided'with a back cap, B, internally threaded to screw upon a correspondingly-threaded projecting flange, a, on the center. This back cap may, however, be attached to it in any other suitable way-such, for instance, as by screwing into the center, as shown in my other application, hereinbefore specified, or by snapping into place. The center A will also be provided with a suitable front plate or cover, which may be a ring-bezel screwing or snapping into place and provided with a crystal, in case the watch is to be an openeface watch. If a hunter-case is desired, the usual hinged cover will be provided, the center A being provided with the recess a to receive the lift and catch springs in this case. The center A is provided at its upper edge with an inwardly-proj ectingiiange, a2,to` which ange is hinged a movemcntholding ring, C, adapted to receive the watch-movement, and capable, owing to its hinged connection with the casecenter, of being swung out when it is desired to inspect or remove the movement.

D indicates a case-lining,cupshaped in form and preferably constructed in a single piece. This case-lining fits within the center A, and is secured therein in any suitable manner, its upper edge abutting against and being covered and concealed by the flange azen the case-center, against which flange the case-lining is held. The case-lining D is provided with a seat, d, to receive the movement-holding ring when in position, and is preferably constructed with Haring walls to lit the lower portion ofl the movement-holding ring, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Fro m the above description it may be readily seen that when the movement has been placed in position in the movement-holding ring and this latter swung into place the case-lining may be slipped into position from the back of the case until it bears against the flange a2 of the case-center, in which place it will effectually protect the back or exposed portion of the movement, since it incloses the same entirely. The projecting iiange c2 covers the edge-of the case-lining and renders any finishing or plating of f the said edge unnecessary, since it conceals the lining entirely from view. The back and front caps complete the case in the usual manner and give additional protection against dust.

It is obvious that various modifications in the details of construction may be made without departing fromthe principle of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be linderstood as limiting myself strictly to the precise details hereinbefore described, and shown in the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a watchcase, the case-center and the movement holding ring hinged thereto, in combination with the case-lining surrounding the back portion of the movement-holding ring, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. The combination, with the ease-center A and the movement holding ring C, hinged thereto, of the cup -shaped case-lining D, adapted to fit within the case-center and surround the movement-holding ring, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
