To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN C. HUMPHREYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sutton, in the county of BraXton and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful VTatchcase, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to watch cases.

The object of the invention is to provide a case designed more particularly for use by railroad employees, which shall be dustproof and in which the cap of the winding stem shall be so arranged as positively to prevent it from turning, thus, in pendentset watches, precluding the possibility of any movement of the hands, an incident that has been the cause of many accidents.

A further object is to provide a case presenting the above features, that shall be ornamental in appearance, cheap to manufacture, and durable in use.

With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a watch case, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corre sponding parts: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a watch case constructed in accordance with the present invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the watch case showing the cap that covers the winding stem in open position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2, showing the manner of mounting the stem to prevent the entrance of dust. Fig. 4 is an edge view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2.

The case may be constructed of any kind of metal suited to the purpose and may be of either the hunting or open face type, the former being shown in this instance. In perimetric contour, the case is an irregular square with rounded corners, the latter to reduce wear of the pocket of the user to a minimum, and also to give a neat and finished appearance to the article. is provided with the usual pendent 1 in which is fitted a dummy stem 2 and a bow 3, the object of the stem being to cause the case to have the appearance of an ordinary one.

The gist of the present invention resides in combining with the case, at one corner thereof and adjacent to the pendent, a cap 4 which houses the winding stem 5, the lat ter operating to wind the watch in the usual manner. The cap, as will be obvious, is hollow and is provided with butts G which are fitted between similar butts 7 formed on the rim of the case, it being designed that the connections between these parts shall be a close one to prevent an unsightly appearance. In order to hold the cap in the locked position shown in Fig. 1 a spring catch 8 is provided which may be released from engagement with the inner side of the rim by a button 9.

As shown in Fig. 4:, that portion of the rim that is cut away to accommodate the cap is provided with upstanding flanges 10 that are designed to fit snugly against the inner walls of the sides of the cap, thus to preclude the entrance of dust, and at the same time relieve the hinge butts from lateral strains.

It is to be understood that the improvements herein shown and described are applicable for use in connection with either pendent-set or lever-set watches, and as this will be readily understood detailed illustration thereof is omitted.

It is further to be understood that the back and bezel, where the watch is of the open face type, may be screwed onto the rim, and where it is a hunting case, the front lid 11 will be hinged to the rim as shown at 12 in Fig. 1.

The dust proof feature is secured by the angular disposition of the winding stem relative to the pendent, whereby any tendency of the dust to work downward will be prevented, as it will be shed in the act of drawing the watch from the pocket.

The improvements herein described are simple in character, but will be found thoroughly efficient for the purposes designed and will coact in the presentation of a watch case that will be highly durable and thoroughly dust-proof.

What I claim as new is:

1. A watch case rim provided on one side of the pendant with flanges, a winding stem disposed between the flanges, and a cap hinged to the rim and arranged to fit snugly against the flanges.

2. A watch case rim provided on one side of the pendant with flanges, a winding stem disposed between the flanges, a cap hinged to the rim and arranged to fit snugly against the flanges, and means for locking the cap in closed position.
