GEORGE G. SMITH, OF ST. ALBANS, VERMONT.
FASTENING FOR HINGED AND SLIDING DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,871, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed February 28, 1887. Serial No. 229,161.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. SMITH, Of St. Albans, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have inventedla new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Hinged and Sliding Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is afront elevation of my improved fastening applied to the sliding door of a freight-car, the door being closed and locked; Fig. 2, a longitudinal transverse section in line 00 m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a front elevation of my invention as embodied in the form of a small lock for hinged doors.
My invention relates to animprovement in the fastenings for hinged and sliding doors for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me February 8, 1887, No. 357,344, said fastenings consisting of a swinging bolt having an angular perforation in one end thereof to fit upon a pivot formed with a portion of its length angular in cross-section, (to enter the angular perforation in the bolt and prevent it from turning,) and with the remain ing portion cylindrical, (to serve as an axis for the bolt, upon which it may freely swing.) The bolt is made to secure a sliding door by forming an offset in the outer free end of the bolt to engage a counterpart stop fitted upon the door, the engagement being efi'ected when the bolt is dropped upon the angular portion of the pivot, and released when the bolt is lifted, so that the bolt will be free to turn upon the upper cylindrical portion of the pivot. It secures a swinging door by being simply turned against the door and then dropped upon the angular stem, so as to become fast.
My invention has for its object to provide for,
(No model.)
ment with said pivot-pin, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the swinging bolt pivoted upon a pin, 13, secured to the casing at one side of the opening for the door 0. The pin B is angular in cross-section at its lower end, and is cylindriea] in its upper portion, and the pivotal aperture in the bolt A is made angular to embrace the angular portion of the pin, so that it may not turn thereon unless slipped up upon its cylindrical portion, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 1; hence when the bolt is turned against a closed swinging door and dropped on its pivot to engage the angular portion thereof, the door will be fastened; or, in case ofa sliding door, the bolt A, being provided with a terminal offset, D, is dropped, and thereby brought into engagement at its outer end with a suitable stop or catch, E, on the sliding door, simultaneously with its engagement at its inner end with the angular portion of the pivot, so as to operate to prevent the door from being opened; This construction and function of the bolt is described in my aforesaid Letters Patent.
To prevent the bolt from being lifted from the angular portion of its pivot, and thereby becoming free to turn upon its cylindrical portion, unless by consent of a party controlling the same by a key, I insert within a suitable recess formed in the inner endof the bolt an auxiliary or look bolt, G, adapted to move transversely to the pivot-pin and into engagement with a recess, H, formed therein, the lock-bolt being placed in position to register with the recess when the swinging bolt is in engagement with the angular portion of the pivot-pin, as shown in Fig. 2 and by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3. This auxiliary lockbolt G is fitted to be moved to and from the pivotpin by means of a key, K, which is govthe use of the proper key the lock-bolt is withdrawn.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a door-fastener, of a 5 swinging bolt, a pivot-pin, upon which the bolt is free to turn, an'auxiliary bolt fitted in the swinging bolt to move transversely to the pivot-pin into and out of engagement therewith, and a detachable key adapted to actuate 10 the auxiliary-bolt, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2 The combination, in a door-fastener, of a swinging bolt, A, having an angular perforation in one end thereof, a pivot-pin, B, formed 15 with a portion of its length angular anda portion cylindrical, and upon which the bolt is fitted, a lock-bolt, G, fitted in the swinging bolt to move into and out of engagement with the angular portion of the pivot when the swinging bolt is in register therewith, and a detachable key adapted to move the lock-bolt, substantially in the manner andfor the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 2 5 scribing Witnesses.
GEO. G. SMITH.
