UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. MARTINEAU AND CLARENCE R. MAETINEAU, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
GAB-DOOR DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed April 21, 1915. Serial N 0. 22,801.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM C. MAR- TINEAU and CLARENCE R. MARTINEAU, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city and county of Albany, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to devices or fixtures for snugly holding and securing, and for looking or sealing, car or other sliding doors. Its object is to provide a very cheap, simple, efiicient, durable and easily securable means to this end.
In the drawings, which represent a preferred form of our device, Figure 1 is atop plan view, and Fig. 2, a front elevation, of the fixture in operative position; F ig- 3 is a like elevation of the fixture in its unsecured position.
11 designates the wall of a car or other structure formed with a stile 12 and door opening 13, a door 14 being hung to slide over or past the opening 13 in any desired manner. To door 14 is bolted a hasp-plate 15, comprising a strap member 16, bolted to the door in the usual manner, and a gooseneck 17, having a shank end projecting at a right angle with strap 16 into and through door 14, and as shown, secured by a nut at its free threaded end, on which swings a hasp 18 formed with a longitudinal aperture 19. Secured to wall 11 and embracing stile 12 is a combined striker, door-guide and lug 20, comprising a striker flange 21, an angular member 22 at the opposite side of stile 12, these being integral with a front plate 23 having an extension 24 projecting beyond flange 21 and beveled at 25, a forwardly projecting lug 26 formed with two vertical apertures 27, 28 and an apertured ear 29. It will be noted that lug 26 forms a high stifiening rib integral with plate 23, and, in the present instance, with extension or guideplate 24. It will also be noted that plate 23 is secured to the car by a bolt which passes through stile 12 and wall 11, its head being hidden, see Figs. 1 and 2,'by hasp 18, the bolt forming a concealed and inaccessible means for securing lug member in position. Depending from ear 29 by means of a chain 30 is a locking pin 31 having an offset head 32 apertured at 33. A look or seal 34 is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from an inspection of the drawings. It will be seen that door 15 when slid into closed position is guided and firmly held by the beveled extension 24 and strikes against flange 21. Hasp 18 is then raised and its aperture 19 passed over lug 26. Locking pin 31 is then dropped through aperture 27, thus holding hasp 18 in operative relation to lug 26. The shackle of a seal or look 34 is then passed through the registering apertures 33 in pin head 32 and 28 in lug 26, thus absolutely locking pin 31 in its operative position to prevent its removal from lug 26 and the subsequent unlatching of part 18.
It is obvious that certain mechanical changes may be made in our device without departing from our invention.
What we claim is:
1. In a car door fixture, a hasp adapted to be secured to the car door; and an integral hasp engaging and door guide member adapted to be secured to a stile on the car body, said member including a plate adapted to be secured to the stile, a guide-plate extending horizontally beyond the stile and so as to cover a portion of the closed door, and a lug extending forwardly from both said plate portions and forming a stiffening rib for said guide-plate, and an engaging member for said hasp, said lug being apertured for the passage of a bolt operative to hold said hasp in engaged position.
2. In a car door fixture, a hasp engaging member comprising a plate and a forwardly projecting, apertured lug integral therewith, said plate having a bolt receiving aperture adjacent said lug; and a hasp having an opening adapted to engage over said lug and a solid portion adapted to cover said bolt aperture, whereby the head of a bolt in said aperture is covered only when said hasp is in its engaged position.
